I just found his death on Ancestry.com in 1843 @ Westbury. Several years ago I ordered the 1841 Census on film from Salt Lake and found Shem there. Mind you, at that time I had to go through the film bit by bit. It took me hours. It is so much easier now with so much data on the computer. I imagine that Shadrack and Martha had other children to say nothing about the several wives he probably had after living from 1751 to 1843. Kathleen

Many thanks to Patsy of New Zealand. You found my HAWKINS in 1841 in Wickwar, GLOS. I stupidly posted my request to the Wilts message board!!! Sorry! Also a big thank you to Eliz. (even though I did lead you up the garden path). However, I know that James HAWKINS was born in the Lea & Cleverton area of Wiltshire around 1785-1790 ish and I THINK he had a younger brother called Joseph HAWKINS who then migrated to Wickwar in Glos. Joseph HAWKINS married Ann COOK at the Chapel, Rangeworthy in 1823 and moved to Cirencester. I would also be grateful for any info on the Chapel at Rangeworthy. Was it non-conformist? If Any kind person has PR's for the area I would be most grateful for a lookup for the HAWKINS family. I noticed there were some HAWKINS' around in Little/Great Somerford which is also near Cleverton. Thanks for your time. Sue
Hi all. Sorry to ask again, but I have asked a similar question before and was directed to the Zelley site, concentrated mostly in Dorset, but unfortunately does not help me with this part of the query. First part of enquiry - could SKS confirm for me that William Zealy (could be Zealey or Sealey) was born in Wilstshire around 1660. He married Ann Rowswell 1668 Bremhill (apologies if this is incorrect spelling) in 1689 and children were William, Robert, John and James. I do not know who his parents were. I have references to births and marriages also in Seagry, Malmesbury and Great Somerford but cannot confirm. Second part of enquiry - if this turns out to be correct, can SKS also confirm that Robert Zealy born about 1693 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, married Margaret Kerley on or about 1695. I only have one child for them Robert born 1724 - I think in London. I am looking to see if Robert 1693 had any more marriages and/or children in Wiltshire. I have found some of the entries on IGI, but wonder if anyone has access to the parish records to conclusively confirm the information. Any and all information out of the registers or other non-IGI material would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Helen South Australia
Hi Folks, Greetings from Toronto, Canada. In 1905, in Shrivenham church, Jethro Kinch COLEING 46, farmer, married Ethel Marion LAWRENCE 28. Frances Caroline COLEING, born in 1909 4. Dorothy Helen COLEING, born in 1910 5. Jethro John COLEING, known as John, born in 1912 6. Janet Ursula COLEING, born in 1914 7. Kathleen Winifred COLEING, born in 1915, and 8. Charles Lawrence COLEING, born in 1919, died in 1967. 1) I have a reference about Alice Mary Freegard who lived in Chippenham but died in St. Andrew's Hospital. The entry is ambiguous and it's not clear if this hospital was actually in Chippenham or elsewhere. So can anyone please tell me what were the hospitals in Chippenham in say the 1930s to the 1960s? Since the parish church in Chippenham is St. Andrew it's a fairly safe bet but I would like to know for certain. Today's names for hospitals only say "regional" or "county" or something similarly generic so a Google search was no help. I have another entry from 1966 (for her younger sister Lucy, who died later the same year) that says "Chippenham District Hospital", and I don't know what that was either. Kelly's 1939 directory for Wiltshire, the latest that I have easy access to (and where would we be without Archive CD Books?) doesn't mention hospitals at all! I can only assume that they were not considered as important as the "Customs & Excise & Pensions Office", or the public weighbridge at the railway station, both of which get a mention! 2) And while I'm digging for information on Chippenham, in the same 1939 directory the same "Miss Alice Mary Freegard" is listed as a shopkeeper at 35 Palmer St. That was the year before I was born, but can anyone on this list, in my generation or older, tell me what kind of shop it was? Was it still there after the war? In the 1901 census she was in Wantage, Berkshire, listed as "House Furnisher's Assistant". She was then 26, and possibly learning a trade. So was the shop in Chippenham a furniture shop or an interior decorator's? She was already 64 by 1939, and probably due to retire soon, but she lived on until 1966, unmarried and still in Chippenham, and she died at the respectable age of 91. Her sister Lucy followed her at age 90 a few months later, also in Chippenham. It's possible, even probable, that they had set up house together, but I don't know that because the addresses at the time of death are different. I know how Alice and Lucy fit into the Freegard family trees, but I'd like to know what they were doing with their lives, because the last reference I have for either of them otherwise is in their home village of Dauntsey in 1912, when they each had 50 or 55 years or the majority of their lives left to live. I note Elizabeth's reply to your query but wonder if this may by your couple? Wickwar, Gloucestershire West End Cottage, West End Lane James HAWKINS 50 Ag lab. Not born in county Elizabeth 60. Born in county James HOWELL 25 Veterinary surgeon. Born in county. No other HAWKINS in Wickwar in 1841. If you don't already have him, this James appears to be still in Wickwar, Gloucestershire in 1851: Hill House Cottage James HAWKINS 66 Labourer. B Chouton? I am looking for the parents and siblings of William Trowbridge married to Hannah Scammel in Berwick St John in 1809. William was born around 1776-81 in Wiltshire (not Berwick St John) and died 1849. Hannah was born in Berwick St John around the same time and died 1848. I believe her parents were Thomas Scammel and Jane Lucas. Their children (that I know of) were Elias 1811, William 1813 and James 1816. Only Elias seems to have lived to have a family. Unfortunately William Trowbridge was a very common name in those parts and I cannot make any headway in deciding where he was born. I would be very grateful if anyone has any ideas. Thanks, Anne
Wickwar is definitely in Gloucestershire.

Hi Listers, Is there sks on the list who lives in the Swindon region who could look up newspaper archives? My father, Robert Henry Gordon MYLES, married his 1st wife, Kathleen Beryl BENNETT, at the Swindon Parish Church on the 19 Dec 1931. I love to know if there is any write up in the local paper in connection with this event, a photo would be brilliant as the family has no photo of Kathleen (Kath)? Thanks, Rosemary M Chalmers Darwin NT Australia rosechal@octa4.net.au

Hi Kathleen, I don't have anything to do with this family, but I happened to have the Westbury 1851 census open on my fiche reader! There is also a Uriah COOK, a 45 yo Ag Lab born in Bratton and Ham COOK a 58 yo blacksmith born in Westbury. How much do you want to bet they were related? There are 55 COOK's in the area, most of them born in Bratton. There's a strong non-conformist population in the area.... that's where the name 'Shem' came from. Let me knw if you want more, I can transcribe the Bratton born COOK's if you like.
