    3. Dear All, John is quite correct. There was a significant agricultural depression after the Napoleonic Wars were finished in 1815 which last for nearly 20 years. Wages for ag labs was particularly depressed and most had to call on Parish Relief to feed their families. Many landowners, faced with depressed farm prices, enclosed their lands, further displacing ag labs. Rather than remain in such depressed conditions, many families migrated to other parts of the British Isles, particularly the towns, or even overseas. Have a great day!! 3. Julie, Marsh Road isn't in Westbury as such - it's nearby Dilton Marsh. I realised this when looking in the Westbury District 1851 census and saw Slobs Lane! It's there now, and you can find it on Multimap. Marsh Rd begins in Dilton Marsh as High St, becomes Clivey St, then Marsh Rd at Five Lords Farm, ending on the A36 near Standerwick. 1. Re: [ENG-WIL] Two questions about Chippenham - both involving Alice Mary Freegard (1875-1966)
    2. Arthur Pye
    3. Hi Tony, St Andrews was indeed the former workhouse as referenced by Adrian. Chippenham's hospitals were all amalgamated at that location about 15 years ago and it is now known as Chippenham Community Hospital. When it was St Andrews it was primarily a geriatric facility. Prior to the amalgamation, general hospital services were provided at what I remember being called "the cottage hospital", which was about a mile away on London Road on the other side of town. I suspect that this may have been officially the "Chippenham District Hospital". I'll try to get into Chippenham library sometime this week and see what I can find in the collection of directories there. I just took a drive along Palmer Street. No. 35 is a residential property in a terrace (probably built in the 1920s at a guess). There's no evidence of a shop front, but of course it may have been modified at some time. And the houses may have been re-numbered. The adjacent properties are numbered 36, 36A, 36B, which is a bit odd. (All of this is based on my glancing at the houses as I drove by, so I may have got it slightly wrong.) The directories should throw some light on this. -- Arthur (in Chippenham, but only since 1976) In message <001301c67cfa$c36b5fa0$ae209a8e@oemcomputer>, Tony Woodward <tony.woodward@one-name.org> writes >1) I have a reference about Alice Mary Freegard who lived in Chippenham but >died in St. Andrew's Hospital.
