    1. SOPER & CLIFFORD of Borscombe
    2. Madalene Frost
    3. Hello folks I am new to this list but am a regular Devon-L subscriber. Elizabeth Clifford of Borscombe married John Soper at Chudleigh, Devon, 2 Aug 1574. She was born in Borscombe about 1550. I am trying to prove my ancestry to Elizabeth Clifford of Borscombe, through her marriage to John Soper who was *probably* the great great grandfather of my ancestor Sarah Soper. Elizabeth was the fourth child and daughter of Henry Clifford of Borscombe, and Elizabeth (probably HUNGERFORD). There is a Mormon ancestor file on the IGI which suggests that her husband John SOPER also came from Borscombe (or perhaps elsewhere in Wiltshire). However I believe he was probably from Devon. I need to confirm or disprove his baptism in Borscombe. If sks has access to the registers for Borscombe or has any Borscombe or Wiltshire Sopers from the 16th century I would be very grateful for your help. 3. Hi folks I have been trying (in vain) to find a missing generation. This is all I have to go on so far Thomas HAYWARD died Great Amesbury 1724. Anne POOR died 1726 Little Amesbury. Anne named her sister Mary sole Executrix in her will. She also names her Grandfather (the above Thomas Hayward) Apparently he was a 'man of standing' owning land & Tenements in Little & Great Amesbury. There are also four other names mentioned as part of Thomas's will:- Thomas BEACH of Fittleton Robert DUKE Thomas FRANCIS Henry BIGGS Amongst other things these four men were instructed to "Lease or Mortgage" his estate to pay his two Grand-daughters Mary & Anne POORE three hundred pounds each of lawfull money of Great Britain. Lucky girls!!!! The only possibility of the girl's parents I have found are Phillip & Mary POORE but can find nothing else that seems to 'fit' I have tried all combinations on the National Archives to try to find Thomas's will with no luck so ANY advice/help would be appreciated Pauline

    3. Hi Liz - this looks like Jane in 1841: Trowbridge, Courts Joseph COOK 50 Labourer Susanah 56 Jane 20 Shoebinder Thomas 8 Edward 11 months All listed as born in county And this looks like Edward's family although he is not with them: Trowbridge, Halve Thomas HOOPER 40 Male servant Sarah 42 Picker Mary 15 All born in county There are a number of possible sightings of Edward in 1841 but none in Wiltshire. The most likely match is an Edward HOOPER 20 Shoemaker, in the General penitentiary Westminster, Middlesex, born 'out of county'. If you don't have them, the family are in Chelsea in 1851: Edward HOOPER 32 Shoe maker. b Trowbridge, Wilts Jane 29 Boot binder. B Road, Somerset Edward W COOK 11. B Trowbridge, Wilts William C HOOPER 6. B Trowbridge, Wilts Sarah J HOOPER 4. B St Anns, Middlesex James HOOPER 1 month. B Chelsea, MSX Hope this adds a little. 3. If he fought at Waterloo, I suspect he would have been awarded a Medal and therefore listed on a medal roll for Waterloo. As far as I know these are listed at the National Archives. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ There is a partial transcription here http://valmayukuk.tripod.com/britishfamily/id19.html For my own army/navy research I made use of a specialist service, who did the lookups at the archives for me, which was cheaper for me than travelling up to London. -- Jane Taubman http://www.taubman.org.uk Family Historian User Group http://www.fhug.org.uk On 28/05/06, Laura Thomas <ellie.thomas@ntlworld.com> wrote: > I'd appreciate some advice on how I could track down the record of a man who fought at Waterloo. 2. Richard Heaton
    3. Hi, Just incase its of interest, another lean month (due to work commitments), I've only added another 9 complete newspapers covering the titles and dates below : Berrows Worcester Journal (1765), Bath Advertiser (1759), Salisbury and Winchester Journal various editions from (1785), (1786), and (1788). Plenty of Adverts for Wiltshire and Hampshire, including the usual estate sales, bankrupts, , debtors, jobs, run away apprentices, etc etc. There were a few "highlights" this month (or the less typical reports), in 1785 George III acquires some of Handel's original manuscripts; in 1786 Smugglers use a coffin as a covert means to land contraband goods, [Mr] Hamlet advertises an early Fire and Burglar alarm, and [Mr] Wilkes of Salisbury offers Clogs for sale (which begs the question did my Wiltshire ancestors wear clogs ?) ; while in 1788 there is another rare advertisement, [Mr] Wentworth of Portsmouth advertises his skill at wire work, with a product range from kitchen sieves, to bird cages and rat traps. As usual the Index is accessed through the page below : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dutillieul/index.html Use the Freefind Search box to locate references Webpages, then use Ctrl F to locate the precise reference (as most pages - being complete newpapers - take some time to read through !)
