Hello Michael I went to the Local Studies Library this afternoon and went through the microfilms of the 1814 Salisbury Journal newspaper. Unfortunately I couldn't find John even though there were reports of other court lists. Of course a few of the pages were so pale parts were unreadable, so I bet he was on one of them!! Every edition of the paper was taken up with the latest news of the battles against Napoleon so I suppose lesser news did get squeezed out. If you do think of anything I can do here in Salisbury, let me know. Put a heading on the message I'll notice - something like FOR DOT then I won't accidentally chuck it in the bin!! Best wishes, Dot > Thank you for your interest and taking the time to reply. > > When John was transported his age was given as 24 so he would have been > born c1800. > > In 1814 when he was sentenced to 12 months for larceny no age was given. > > I've found the baptism of a John in Shaftesbury, Dorset the illegitimate > son of Elizabeth baptised December 2nd 1799 and this could possibly be > him but then again possibly not. > > My re found pen pal has details from his arrival and I am waiting for > him to let me have the names of the children to see if the tie in with > any that could parents over here. Being a new subscriber, I am hoping some kind list member can help me with how to obtain further information regarding a family member who died in Devizes. Dudley Albertus WRIGHT was born in Epsom,Surrey on Aug 28, 1874.He moved to France in the about 1892 and joined the French Foreign Legion. He married in France. He was the valet for the entertainer Maurice Chevalier and they travelled the world together. He had 4 children all born in France. His 2 eldest children Elizabeth born 1896 and Alfred born 1898 were residing in Brighton with their grandparents in 1901 and are listed as being born in France but are British subjects. At least 3 of his children lived in France and raised families there and died there. I have the death certificate for Dudley Albertus WRIGHT from Devizes. He died at St James Hospital on March 12, 1952 aged 77. His residence is given as South View (looks to be ROWDE, the writing is difficult to make out) Devizes Rd.The name and address of the informant is given as his son-in-law A.E. (again hard to make out) PERRETT or PERRELL. Since Dudley Albertus WRIGHT only had 2 daughters and the one lived and died in France we are assuming that AE Perrett must have been married to his eldest daughter Elizabeth Emma Wright and are also assuming that she must have stayed in England after she was living with her granparents in 1901. I would be interested to find out possible places where Dudley Albertus may have been buried in the area of Devizes and anything at all which would help regarding Elizabeth Emma WRIGHT and her husband AE PERRETT or PERRELL who are total brick walls. I din't know about dau Nellie or Mary but Willie was my grandfather. My father was the WW11 John H. Vennell. His uncle was the other John H. I have a photo of a serviceman WW1 now I know it was my fathers uncle, John H. I discovered his g-grandmother, RUTH VENNELL, b. 1847 in Trowbridge d. 1927 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Now here is where it gets interesting: My g-grandfather, John Henry Vennell, b 1854 in Trowbridge d. 1904 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Ruth Vennell married in 1870 to William RANDALL (b. 1845 in Trowbridge d. 1920 USA) Came to USA in 1893 Ruth came 1895 John Henry Vennell served in the Royal Navy (1881 census) came to USA about 1890's or earlier. He married Martha Long in the USA. b.1856 Eng. d. 1931 USA What I would like to find is when John Henry Vennell came to America. Can he be found on British census after 1881. Any information on other siblings? William Vennell b. 1837 came to USA with family in the 1880's Leah Vennell b. 1841 Married James HEWETT Rhoda Vennell This is all the information I have. I'd like to get a feel on how they lived, occupations, neighborhood, religion. I'd like to make more connections with the VENNELL, RANDALL, LONG and HEWETT. I have lived in Maine, USA all my life. My husband and I have been married for 35 yrs and have two "perfect" sons and a wonderful grand-daughter, 3yrs. I love finding out about our English families. I'm hoping to make some Trowbridge connection. Thank you, Judy (VENNELL) Howgate
Hello Dot Thank you for your interest and taking the time to reply. When John was transported his age was given as 24 so he would have been born c1800. In 1814 when he was sentenced to 12 months for larceny no age was given. I've found the baptism of a John in Shaftesbury, Dorset the illegitimate son of Elizabeth baptised December 2nd 1799 and this could possibly be him but then again possibly not. My re found pen pal has details from his arrival and I am waiting for him to let me have the names of the children to see if the tie in with any that could parents over here. If one has a middle name of Goddard we would be laughing but we'll have to wait and see. Again many thanks for your help Regards Michael gulliver@gotadsl.co.uk wrote: > Hello Michael > > There was a John Bugden baptised in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury on 26th > December 1793, son of Goddard Bugden and his wife Mary (IGI Batch number > C153491) > > Might this be the John you are looking for (New Sarum was the name much used > in those days for Salisbury). Hello Michael There was a John Bugden baptised in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury on 26th December 1793, son of Goddard Bugden and his wife Mary (IGI Batch number C153491) Might this be the John you are looking for (New Sarum was the name much used in those days for Salisbury). You didn't give his approximate date of birth - maybe you don't know it - so I'm just guessing. Bugden is a well known name in south Wiltshire. There were also Bugden families in the Donhead St Mary area of south Wilts living alongside my Gurd family There was a John Bugden baptised on 8th October 1786 at Donhead St Mary, son of Elijah and Elizabeth. I noticed a sibling baptised a few years earlier and there might be others. 'Your' John might be either of these - or neither of them! If you'd like to contact me off- List I'll se what I can do to help Best wishes, Dot in Salisbury, Wilts > I've recently made contact with a pen pal I had 45 years ago and he has > just emailed telling me that his Gt. Has anyone come across Kettlety records in this area? I have collected a few but have been unable to identify William's parents. Some records indicate he was born 1810. William also gave Bristol as a location of birth. His parents may have been William or John Kettlety, soldier and Ann.His death certificate does not clarify his parents. I have his details from 1830 as he was transported to NSW, Australia for stealing. He was tried in Worcester 1829.His occupation in records is listed as tailor and this was his trade in NSW. Is there an online site for checking Kettlety soldiers within this time frame? There were a few Kettletys listed in Devizes gaol records and I have those details but have no way of connecting them to William although I think it likely they were related. These include James Kettlety born about 1796 and John Kettlety born about 1808/9.There is also a Sarah Kittlety who offended in 1821. I also have a baptism record for Maria Kittlety, daughter of William Kittlety and Anna Maria baptised at Holt, 10 June 1810. I have been wondering if she was William Kettlety's sister. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Julie
Hi, I'm new to this list but subscribe to many others. I've recently made contact with a pen pal I had 45 years ago and he has just emailed telling me that his Gt. Gt. Grandfather was a convict. This is what he wrote; My great, great grandfather was a convict transported as a young man in the early 1800's on board the HMS Guilford. We believe he was convicted of theft in Liverpool Court of Petty Sessions. After arrival in Australia he was assigned to Sydney and later to the Hunter Valley (about 85 miles North West of Sydney). He was granted a "ticket of leave" (i.e. parole) after about 6 years but it was cancelled shortly after because he was outside his assigned area. He was then granted another ticket of leave and shortly after married a British officer's daughter. The marriage was written up in the Sydney Morning Herald at the time. He eventually moved to the Far North Coast of New South Wales with the first wave of early settlers to that area. I am a direct descendant of his family which continued to live in the Richmond River area for some 160 years (which is a long long time in this country). It is fashionable in Australia to be the descendent of a convict - it shows you are a "dinky dye Australian". John BUGDEN was transported and arrived March 5th 1824 on board The Guildford that had sailed from Portsmouth. Checking the criminal registers I find that John Bugden's life of crime started in 1814 when he was sentenced at January sessions of the City of New Sarum to 12 months for larceny. Can anybody help with further background on the Bugden family? It would be nice to find some living relatives. Any help would be really appreciated. Michael

Good morning I wonder if anyone can help I have ancestors who seemed to move around the borders of Wiltshire and Berkshire ie; Hungerford,Speen, Kintbury, Tilehurst. I have exhausted I think Berks looking for a marriage of William Randall to Elizabeth ? around 1798 to 1801 they bapt a son William at Tilehurst in 1801. But there does not appear to be a marriage there for them, William senior appears to have been bapt 1772 at Hungerford St Lawrence son of Humphrey Randall and Sarah Goddard. It has been suggested that the marriage could have been in Wiltshire. This brick wall seems to get higher & higher any help or advice gratefully accepted thankyou Beverley
