    3. Hi all. Whilst searching for more Zealey/Sealey relatives, I came across a district called Norton Coleparle, Wiltshire (IGI site). Can anyone tell me where it is and what the district did/does? The dates I have for the Benjamin's are around 1717 - they also have a different spelling for some children, with Bangar/Banger. Thanks Helen South Australia

    2. Liz, The reason I asked is that when in Salt Lake City I copied many births, baptisms and marriage in Wiltshire. And on some of the copies that I copied for my family had that family on it in West Ashton, which I believe is very close to North Bradley. When I saw your name Cook along with many other names I I remembered seeing them on a lot of those papers. How about a James Merritt in Yarnbrooke. There is a death for him. Judy

    3. Shoddy Clothes were those made from this material rather than, eg Finest Worsted. We are not using Shoddy in this context as one would in Shoddy Goods, ie not fit for purpose. Shoddy = Inferior rather than useless. Jim earoberts@bigpond.com wrote: Recently I toured a woollen mill in Tasmania that specialises in making blankets, all it off cuts waste bits etc are re worked and made in Blankets for the Salvation Army and OS aid organisations, disaster relief etc. The material these blankets are made of is what would be what is referred to as Shoddy. I can quite imagine it was used to make army uniforms Elizabeth -----Original Message----- From: Helen Ross [mailto:helenross@internode.on.net] Sent: Saturday, 10 June 2006 6:39 PM To: ENG-WILTSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WIL] A shoddy merchant Thanks Mike. I always thought she was born in Melksham but recently came across info that stated she was born in Dandridge Hill or Landridge Hill Wiltshire. She married Frederick Sutton in 1879, he died and she married Henry Allan in 1887 in Rolleston Staffordshire.I have her father listed as James Carpenter and wife Rebbecca Long. 1. WHEELER and TRIMBY, WALKER, WILLIAMS
    2. Val Burge
    3. I'd like to throw my 'possibles' out to the list for suggestions! From the will of Joseph WHEELER in 1817, I have a list of his son William (Baptised Dilton 1766) and Hester WHEELER's surviving children in Dilton Marsh. They are Joseph, James, William, Ann (HAYNES), Mary and Sarah (still a minor in 1817). William Jnr is my gg grandfather. I now have three William WHEELER's married to a Hester... William to Hester TRIMBY, both of Dilton in 1792 at Dilton; William from Westbury to Hester WILLIAMS in 1788 at Corsley Somerset, just over the border; and William of Rode to Hester WALKER in 1784 at Rode Somerset, also just over the border. Summing them up... There's too many overlapping children baptised at Dilton to all be WHEELER/TRIMBY, which made it obvious there's another William and Hester... and the 'other' family is likely to be mine, as WHEELER/TRIMBY married after my oldest confirmed child was born. I've confirmed James 1792, Ann 1793, William Feb OR July 1796, Mary 1798. I'm still missing Joseph and Sarah. The 'extra' children were John 1793, William Feb OR July 1796, and Betty 1798. There are some gaps in the children of WHEELER/WALKER baptised at Rode where the 'extra' children at Dilton 'could' fit, but not a lot to confirm this was the case. Any info on their children Ann 1786, Thomas 1787, Samuel 1794, Daniel 1795, Anna 1799, Fanny 1801, James 1803 gratefully accepted. I have a newspaper article of a William WHEELER who died in a boxing match at Dilton in 1812. He had 11 children, and his wife was dead by then. Could this be the same one? Geographically and chronologically, the WHEELER/WILLIAMS marriage in Corsley is very well worth while my following up! Any children born to this marriage would be very gratefully accepted, especially if there's a son named Joseph, and not many others! Any suggestions of ways I may be able to sort them out? These are worse than the James and Sarah BURGE families, I only had two of them to separate! I'm hoping that the William WHEELER's will turn out to be cousins down the track as well. Val

    2. Liz Lane
    3. Dear Listers, I have had so much help from people on this list, so am trying this one again after a break..... Mark MERRITT born North Bradley about 1807, married Elizabeth COOK (born about 1813), almost certainly in North Bradley. By 1851 they were in Tavistock, so out of Wilts, but they must have been there for some time. Their first child was born Tavistock 1842, so I'm assuming they married before then. Have searched the 1837 online for their marriage, but I think it must have been before the 1837 BMDs began. Is there anyone who could disinter their families, please? Hopefully, Liz Elizabeth Lane Worthing West Sussex liz_lane@ntlworld.com

    3. Helen asked : > Whilst searching for more Zealey/Sealey relatives, I came across a district > called Norton Coleparle, Wiltshire (IGI site). Can anyone tell me where it > is and what the district did/does? Norton is about 3 miles southwest of Malmesbury. According to the Victoria County History "Coleparle" is an error for Cole Park, and the error was begun unwittingly by John Speed in 1611, when he marked the word "Coleparke" on his map right after "Norton" for the parish so that they looked like one phrase. Norton is agricultural, but Malmesbury is the market town for the region, and also had cloth mills. These had all fallen out of use by the mid-18th century, but according to the VCH: "The woollen industry was revived c1790 when Francis Hill bought Cannop's Mill and built a new cloth mill, Burton Hill Mill, on its site. Hill chose Malmesbury, away from existing area of cloth production, so that he could install modern machinery without opposition." In the later 19th century censuses some of the female members of my family were listed as silk weavers. The mill was in an imposing building at the bottom of the town, still a local landmark. It was closed in 1950, but since then I can personally remember seeing an antique dealer in the building. It has now been converted into apartments.
