Harry, Not anything to do with your places but I was reminded of a question I got wrong recently at the pub. What is the commonest owl in Britain? Tawny = No, Barn = No, Teat = Yes. HOOTS!! Hi Heather I checked my National Burial Index and there is no Sarah PERKINS burial listed for the parish of Buckland Dinham. (but the records only go to 1886). A general search for "Somerset" didn't find her either. Sorry that I can't help with your actual enquiry, but for a bit of background just do a "google" search for "Buckland Dinham". You can find some great photos as well with an image search. Although very close to the Wiltshire county boundary, Buckland Dinham and Hemington are both in Somerset. (I don't know if they were part of Wiltshire at some stage previously). Does anyone have the burial register from 1881 for the above parish, please? Is it Buckland Dinham or Denham, please? I only found Buckland Dinham on my map? My Sarah Perkins was alive in 1881 living there aged 73 years as a general servant to Henry Sperring and his wife. She came from Hemington, her husband William Perkins is buried in Hemington but Sarah Perkins is not buried with him. Kind regards Heather

Another lean month (again due to work commitments), I've only added another 8 complete newspapers during June, all issues of the Salisbury and Winchester Journal of various dates from (1785), (1786), and (1788) While Wiltshire receives the lions share of the coverage, there are plenty of advertisements for Hampshire so the circulation in Hampshire must have been very strong despite the Hampshire Chronicle (also good advertising coverage of Dorset and Somerset) Historical Highlights Warren Hastings is on trial; American slaves are being ransomed by the Dey of Algiers; Balloon flights are undertaken by Mr Lunardi at York, and Mons. St. Croix at Salisbury; there is a rumour that the government is concerned that serious crime is not getting the punishment they felt it deserved due to lenient jurors (the report suggests petitions for individuals under the sentence of death will be ignored); while another report suggested that 160 convicts will be sent to Nova Scotia ! (which didn't happen !) However my favourite article, isn't Wiltshire or Hampshire this month, but comes from Sussex with an attempted attack by a "tyger" shark on a bather at Brighton (Brighthelmstone) in 1785 (the time of bathing machines wheeled into the waters), Jaws in C18th England !! As usual the Index is accessed through the page below : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dutillieul/index.html Use the Freefind Search box to locate references Webpages, then use Ctrl F to locate the precise reference (as most pages - being complete newpapers - take some time to read through !) Cheers Richard H
