Surnames: Harding Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EUC.2ACI/3133 Message Board Post: I am searching for the family of William Harding <1784> born in Crudwell, Wiltshire. I have listed in the 1841 census of Rodmarton, Glos. He is married to a woman named Mary from Cirencester, Glos. The census indicates all the children were born in Glos. In the same 1841 census of Rodmarton is a William Harding with a son Thomas, also not born in Glos. In a 1851 census in Rodmarton Richard Harding is listed as a widower and was born in Crudwell. Living with him are Thomas and Francis and their place of birth is listed as Charlton and all three are listed as 'wheelright'. Not sure what that is, but assume it has to do with a boat and do not know where Charlton is. I am thinking William and Richard are brothers. Does anyone have a connection? Would like to find the names of the parents.

    3. Hi Jan, There are some SLYs in Warminster interconnected with my PEARCE, CHAMBERS and BEZER families, and with the PRICE family who are also interconnected. I haven't followed up the line systematically as they're not my ancestors. No William in my notes fits the details you give below. Do you have any links with Edward Pearce SLY who married Sarah BEZER some time in the 1830s, and had a child, also Edward Pearce SLY, baptised in 1839? I'd welcome further contact. 1. A Very Important Lesson Learned!
    2. J. P. Nixey
    3. Dear listers, Today I learned a very very important lesson, which I want to share with you all, even though this happened out of this list's area. When we are tracing our family history, don't take it for granted that we will find a marriage in the time frame we expect for the people we are researching. For some time now I have been trying to find the marriage of my great grandparents, Edward James Nixey and Sarah Jane Nicholls in the Somerset area. Their first child was born in 1892, and some very kind and helpful people spent time and effort in checking the bmd images for me, all to no avail. One person sent me the link to the Bath BMD website where he had found Sarah Jane Nicholls birth, and I decided to take a look at that website myself. I checked the marriage index for Edward and Sarah, but, I too found nothing during the 1890s. So I resigned myself to the fact that they just never married. WRONG!!!!! The only reason why I found them was because I decided to do a surname search, and see what other Nixey marriages had taken place. When I finally reached 1938, who did I find? You guessed it! Edward James Nixey and Sarah Jane Nicholls! 1938!!!! At that time their ages would have been: Edward approx 75 and Sarah approx 71. So if you have been trying to find a marriage of an ancestor then don't stop looking until you have reached the time of their death!!! You may be as surprised as I was! I feel this is such an important lesson, that I am willing for this email to be passed on to other rootsweb lists or individuals with an interest in genealogy. Kindest regards to all, Jon

    3. Hi Sally! I was brought up in Tidworth and my brother still lives there so I can answer some of your queries. Firstly Tidworth historically comprised two separate parishes: North Tidworth in Wiltshire (where the impressive Military Cemetery is situated) and South Tidworth in Hampshire which contained most of the barracks. Recently the whole of Tidworth has been 'transferred' to Wiltshire. We lived in North Tidworth where, illogically, the postal address was always Hampshire but walked to school just over the Hampshire border. The family of a good friend of ours kept a shop which was half in each county. As to your great uncle, Tidworth Military Hospital, where he died, was in Hampshire but, like most military hospitals. has now closed. There were two local newspapers which may well have reported his death: "The Andover Advertiser" (most likely) and very possibly "The Marlborough Times". Another possibility would have been "The Salisbury Times". Until recently there was a Tidworth discussion list (Yahoo) but this has now folded. The list owner was the Keeper of the Tidworth Military Cemetery but it would appear that you already have photos of the memorial inscriptions. As to whether a Colour Sergeant would warrant a grand military funeral, the answer is an emphatic "yes!". He would have been a key figure in his regiment and would certainly have been buried with full military honours. The military funeral processions were most impressive and I have seen quite a few in my time as well as photographs of some in the earlier part of the 20th century. If I can be of any further help, let me know. Best wishes Paul (now in Wales) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally Funk" <slf@dccnet.com> To: <ENG-WILTSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 02, 2006 4:32 AM Subject: [ENG-WIL] military funeral tidworth barracks > Hello, > This is my first query to the list. 2. Sally, Both Tidworth and Ludgershall are in Wiltshire. Military funerals are usually very ceremonial affairs. Do you have the death certificate? The GRO reference is Quarter 2 1907 Andover 2c 127. John Henderson was 38. The 16th Foot (Bedfordshires) Regiment amalgamated with The Essex Regiment in 1958 to form 3rd East Anglian Regiment (16th/44th Foot). Military records are held at Kew. Regards, Chris

    1. military funeral tidworth barracks
    2. Sally Funk
    3. Hello, This is my first query to the list. I am trying to find where to look for military records for my G uncle, John Noble HENDERSON, and further records of his funeral. He was a colour sergeant with the second Bedfordshire Regiment. He died at the Military Hospital, S. Tidworth on the 9th of April 1907. I have a newspaper clipping announcing his death at Tidworth Barracks, Wiltshire, as well as his death record. I also have a copy of two photos with an inscriptions "Military Funeral; Bedforshire Regt; tidworth 11/4/07" and "W. R. Jones photo Lodgershall" I am presuming that this is the funeral of John HENDERSON as it was only 2 days after his death, and the family has a copy of the photo. It looks like a major production. Does anyone know why a colour sergeant might warrant such a funeral? And where I might look for further information? Did the Regiment have a small newspaper? Or would the local towns have a newspaper that would carry a story of the funeral? I am not sure which newspaper carried the announcement of his death. Is tidworth still in Wiltshire? or would I be better looking on the Hampshire list? Sally Delta BC
