I am helping to research the Hughes tree for my neighbour. I have nine members of Decima's family and I know Decima was the tenth born so I have one name missing. I have her parents as George Gilmore McTier and Elizabeth Strugnell. I have the McTier's dating back to 1739 but little information with regard to the Strugnell's or the Gilmore's. Any information would be very useful. Regards Pauline

    1. Pullin or Pullen
    2. Hello all from Australia! New to this list. I am here for several reasons. Firstly, a kind person from the GLOS list suggested that I join this list. Not being a local makes geography a bit difficult - regardless of maps. Secondly, Im told that there are a number of Pulli(e)n's in Wilts and especially around Noth Wraxhall(?). Third, the name Ambrose appears about 20 times in my family tree and we in Australia trace this back to the migrant Ambrose Pullin. I have found several mentions of an Ambrose Pulli(e)n in Wilsthire. Fourth, I have found an Ambrose Pulli(e)n born about the same time as my Ambrose in Wilts. So I think there has to be a link here somewhere! Im posting what I have below and look forward to any assistance. Thanks Glenn. This is what I have regarding William Pullin and Mary Ann Tanner. William and Mary Ann were married 26 Jan 1806 in Westerleigh, Glos. They had at least 3 children - John, George and Ambrose Pullin - they were all baptised in Westerleigh, Glos, 1807, 1808 and 1810. I have no other details on John or George, or William and Mary Ann. Ambrose married Sarah (nee Wall) and started a family Ambrose and Sarah were married 31 Aug 1835 St James, Bristol. They are in the 1841 census living in Pile St, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol - children are Sarah Ann (aged 5), Thomas (aged 3) and William (aged 1). Ambrose is listed as a haulier. Sarah Pull(e)n was baptised in Iron Acton and her father was listed as a sevant living in Iron Acton. They migrated to Australia in Aug 1841. At this stage, I have no vital record documents from any of the above. I have 2 oral history notes by descendants of Ambrose and Sarah - 1 from 1893 (Ambrose's son) and 1 from 1964 (Ambrose's great granddaughter). It is possible that William Pullin was a hatter (from the 1893 letter) (unconfirmed) It is possible that William Pullin or his father was a high ranking (possibly captain or above) officer on the Royal Navy (unconfirmed) Ambrose was the youngest of 3 sons so any other children from the marriage of William and Mary Ann would be girls. Ambrose was said to have been a policeman in Bristol before he migrated. As yet unconfirmed. I am also assuming that William and Mary Ann were in their 20's when they started their family so in the 1841 census they would have been toward 60 years of age.

There is a link to the Hobbs family from the Alexander/Brackstone family. My ggg grandmother was Mary Ann Hobbs born in Ramsbury in 1898. her husband Peter Withers was also transported to Tasmania from Wiltshire. He was also a Swing Rioter or machine breaker. He was sent on the Proteus in 1831 after geting a death sentance changed to transportation for life. Mary Ann Hobb's father was Thomas the son of Benjamin Hobbs and Rebecca Alexander. So Joseph and Mattias were cousins of Mary Ann's. Although her husband sent her several letters Mary Ann never joined him. Just as well as I would not have existed. My parents emigrated to New Zealand in 1953 when i was 5 years old. I am descended from Ann Withers born in Ramsbury in 1829 twin to Sarah. 3. Thank you Daphne, That’s great advice and I will be down to my local LDS next week to order the films as I have already checked the catalogue. With luck, I will find out more info from them than the 1841 census. Many thanks again to the listers who have been so generous with their help. 3. I would like to offer this suggestion: Try the parish register films, if available , you can find number for this on from Family Search Catalogue on Family Search International web site; and search for events b; bu; marr; in your family names on either side of the 1841 CS date. Dont forget the Parish Vestry Records where the movements of people and aid given can be found you may find a clue there. Hope this proves useful regards daphne daphne.guthrie@xtra.co.nz Researching areas: Medway, Kent;Wiltshire;Hampshire:Dorset; Sussex;Essex & Norfolk England.
