The 1861 census is causing headaches because there are whole pieces missing, not just streets or folios here and there. So it's quite possible that your people are on the census but that particular page/piece has gone. I've "lost" a family in the 1861 as well. They've probably been mistranscribed at some point.

I have PEEK ancestors, although not in Wiltshire, who also appear under PYKE, PECK and POOK so there can be a lot of mistranscribing amongst those various last names. Happy hunting! 3. I've looked at the census image and it does look like Barbany. I can't find anywhere remotely like it on modern maps or the historical ones on the web. It is possible that it was a hamlet with just a few houses which disappeared or has been absorbed into a larger village. Or even that it was a made up name because William Tranter didn't want anyone to know where he was really from. I suggest you try The local history society in Wiltshire or the county archivist's office. I should imagine that most villages had their own stone mason. 3. Good afternoon, Please could I ask, I know that when people go to look at Parish Registers in the county archives that time is limited but I wondered if I could impose on sometimes time and ask if anyone could look at the St James parish registers for Trowbridge, I am seek the NAPPER family. I know that Daniel NAPPER was born in about 1807 in Trowbridge, and have been told that St James was the only church up until 1830. I would like initially to know the details from his baptism entry, but if anyone does research for that area on a regular basis I would be very grateful for any other information on the NAPPER family - any siblings of Daniel, parents etc I would of course be willing to reimburse any costs incurred. Thank you very much Corrall
