Dear List, These are the Wiltshire families which I am currently researching: MORTIMER of Avebury and Stanton St. Quntin. The eariest known member of the family is one Tubal MORTIMER of Avebury, born circa 1750 but possibly not in Avebury. These are both very distinctive names so I would like to know where he originated. HARDING of Market Lavington. John HARDING of Bishops Lavington married Elizabeth HOLLOWAY in Market Lavington in 1812. He was not baptised in either parish but I have identified a possible John HARDING born in nearby Trowbridge (son of Robert and Mary) and for whom no corresponding marriage is immediately apparent. HOLLOWAY of Market Lavington and Wilsford (near Pewsey). A famous clockmaking family in the 17th century. LONGCRAFT of Wilsford (near Pewsey), Marden and Manningford Bohun. Originally an obscure farming family they rose to prominence in Hampshire, Wales and London as LONGCROFT. However, most branches remained in Wiltshire. James Phillips-Evans
Hi Valerie, Do you have the FENNELLS on the 1841 census? There is a Jacob aged 2 months, parents William & Elizabeth. I have spent the last two days writing out the 1841 Lacock census and found some Fennells so will be happy to send them if you want them. I have HOOD and DUMMER from Lacock. Sandra also in Queensland >Valerie here from Queensland, Australia. I am new to this list so thought >I >would introduce myself and let you all know where my interests in >Wiltshire. >My family are mainly from around Malmesbury and Lacock. >My grandfather Harry FENNELL was born in Malmesbury in 1888 as was his >father (Walter FENNELL) before him. Walters father Jacob FENNELL was born >in Lacock in 1842.
Thanks to Jeff for responding to my previous email. Jeff, it was much appreciated. I would love to be able to get that far back with my Fennells. Regards Valerie.
Rodney, Do you share my interest in the Whale family in Wiltshire? Hello Everybody especially Max, Thanks for the query Max, but my Whale ancestry is solely in Hampshire as far back as I have got it, to early 1600's where I have a brick wall for a couple named Roger Whale and Joan?? who were living at Upton about five miles from where I now live. I think we have corresponded before in the dim and distant past? Regards, Rod. ___________________________________________________________ Try the all-new Yahoo! Mail. Hi Mike I had heard there are quite a few FENNELL's from Bromham, but so far I haven't connected any with my FENNELL's from Malmesbury & Lacock. Sorry about that. Regarding the census, I had the same problem with this family's parents in the 1891 census except they were in Gloucestershire, but a very kind person looked up the records put out by Bristol FHS and found them for me. Apparently, Ancestry.com with whom I was searching, for some unknown reason, had missed a couple of pages for the town I was looking at, and of course my family were in those 2 missing pages. Regards Valerie

Of course I am even more confused as to James' parents. James was born in 1796 and Phoebe in 1795 but their ages on the census don't match. So I suppose his father should be Benjamin, well maybe ...... Do you have any suggestions as to how I can confirm his parentage? Thanks Jan
Valerie, I have transcribed chunks of Malmesbury area, but these end before your Fennells arrived. However, they may have made an earlier visit because I have this in the Bishops Transcripts for 1635 Marriages at the Abbey 1635 Nov-16 FENNELL? 1635 Nov-16 HOGG? No other details available. Hello, Valerie here from Queensland, Australia. I am new to this list so thought I would introduce myself and let you all know where my interests in Wiltshire. My family are mainly from around Malmesbury and Lacock. My grandfather Harry FENNELL was born in Malmesbury in 1888 as was his father (Walter FENNELL) before him. Walters father Jacob FENNELL was born in Lacock in 1842. My one problem is that I cannot find my gr grandfather, Walter FENNELL along with his family in the 1891 census. I have them in the 1901 census living at Henbury, Gloucestershire, but going by this record in 1891 they would have been living in Malmesbury as their 3 eldest children were born in Malmesbury, the youngest of which would have been born around 1891. The 1901 census is as follows:- Walter FENNELL - Head - M - 38 - Carter on Farm - Born, Gloucester. (which is wrong, as I have his birth cert.) Rachel FENNELL - Wife - M - 37 - Born, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Harry FENNELL - Son - 15 - Born, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Lily FENNELL - Daug - 12 - Born, " " Emily FENNELL - Daug - 10 - Born, " " Grace FENNELL - Daug - 7 - Born, Cromhall, Gloucestershire. Bert FENNELL - Son - 5 - Born, ? Gloucestershire Laura FENNELL - Daug - 3 - Born, Fallon?, Gloucestershire If anyone can help, I would love to hear from you. Regards, Valerie
Hi, Found a marriage I was looking for thru Ancestry on the marriage Index for Wiltshire but there are 3 on the page only, and only 1 man. How do I go about finding the missing man. I have ran into this before but was able to get clues from the census but this marriage was in 1910. Edith Alice Truckle married June quarter 1910 Amesbury registration district. Can anyone find out who she married for me? Also is there going to be a release of further census (1911?) Thanks Robin Australia
Hello Everybody, In answer to the query from Bruce I have looked at a newspaper index website and it appears that on Monday 26th September, 1825, George and Edward Billett were taken from Fisherton Jail, which is in Salisbury, to Portsmouth where they were put on the hulk Leviathan. They had originally been sentenced to death for stealing a mare but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life. The two men were brothers and it appears they were from North Wraxall in Somerset. I hope this information is of assistance. Hello Listers, Im attempting to trace the early days of my G-G-Grandfather, Edward BILLETT b.1808 approx. He, along with his brother George BILLETT (b.1798), was transported to the Colony of New South Wales in 1825. They were convicted of horse stealing and given a life sentence. I am led to believe that the horse was owned by the proprietor of the White Bear Inn and, in true convict fashion, attempted to sell it back to him. I believe the Inn is close to where the present BILLETT family reside. I also believe that the brothers were tried and convicted in Salisbury. However, the conditional pardon given to George Billett by the Colonial Governor in 1841 states that he was sentenced at Wilts Assizes on 16 Jul 1825. I have not been able to locate a pardon for Edward Billett as yet. There was also another Billett, William BILLETT, who was also given a life sentence in the same court at the same time but was transported on a different ship. I dont know what his relationship to Edward and George was (maybe brother or cousin) but he was 21 years old at the time of arrival in NSW in 1826. A fourth Billett, a John BILLETT, was transported for a term of 7 years and arrived in 1821 at the age of 31. My question is: can anyone assist me to trace the BILLETT lineage in Wiltshire and perhaps Dorset? Thanks to all, Bruce Johnston
Hi there I am researching the HOOPER and SAUNDERS families from around Faccombe, Collingbourne, Combe and Fawley Have : :Charles Symonds HOOPER who was born abt. 1867 in Combe :Alfred ALEXANDER - unsure where born but he married Fanny or Frances HOOPER in Marlborough in 1862 and I understand he was Governor of the New Devizes Prison. Would be grateful if anyone could suggest a website that would have information about prison officers as such rather than the actual prisons - haven't had much luck with the latter. :Fanny SAUNDERS christened in Fawley 1801. Understand that Fawley is in Hampshire but seems close that any Wiltshire could crossover Thanks a lot and looking forward to reading the list Meegan Darwin, Australia

Hello folks Just re-posting two names again in case any-one can help tobreak down my long-standing brick wall. Here is all the info I have:- Thomas HAYWARD died 1724 in Little Amesbury Anne POORE who died 1726 in Great Amesbury. According to her will Anne had a sister named Mary whome she named as her sole Beneficiary & Executrix. Anne & Mary were Grandaughters to Thomas Hayward To date I have been unable to find the parents of the girls in Wiltshire. I did find birthdates/christenings of an Anne & Mary POORE on the LDS site giving Mary born 1697 and Anne 1699 parents named as Phillip & Mary POORE but further research has revealed nothing more. One other detail. In her will Anne mentions her Grandfather's will. In it he mentions a Thomas BEACH of Hiddleton, Robert DUKE, Henry BIGGS & Thomas HARRIS and charges them with with leasing or morgaging his land, properties and estate to enable them to pay Anne & Mary the sum of £300 apiece. No mention is made of the girl's parents. I have been unable to find Thomas's will online nor at the Wiltshire Record Office so I am going to have to go to Kew to search for it. Living in hope Pauline
