Hi Rob, You're welcome. It was quite easy and I'll tell you how I did it for next time. Most errors where an entry is missing from a page in the marriage register are caused by transcription errors. Most of the district errors are picked up by FreeBMD using a very large number of 'alternate' names so it's usually the volume or the page number that's the problem. Of the entries for Amesbury for that quarter (all 28 of them) half are the wrong gender and can be discounted. Looking at the entries for each of the remainder for likely mistranscriptions I came across the entry for Mr. Marsh, and looking at the image he was obviously on page 321 and therefore the missing entry. Dear All I'm interested in Samuel PEARCE (or PIERCE) born about 1822 in Edington, Wiltshire. He married Elizabeth HISCOCK on 21 Apr 1844 in Edington and lived/worked at Southdown Farm for several years. On the 1841 census, Samuel is living with an Elizabeth PIERCE (possibly his mother)aged c60 and Mary PIERCE (possibly his sister)aged 12. They are all born in Wiltshire and Ag Labs, but it isn't clear if they are living at Southdown Farm or somewhere else in the area. By 1851 Samuel and Elizabeth (wife) are living at Southdown Farm with three children all born Edington. Elizabeth (mother?) and Mary are shown as servants at the main farm house. From this census I can see that Elizabeth senior was born at Chitterne All Saints and that she is a widow. Firstly, I would like to confirm that Samuel's mother is Elizabeth (born c.1784)and discover who his father was. There is a marriage for a Samuel PIERCE and Elizabeth BARTLEY on the IGI, 18 SEP 1811, Edington, Wiltshire which might be them, but Elizabeth BARTLEYs birth/christening isn't on the IGI. None of the Chitterne births appear to be listed on the IGI I'm also interested in finding out more about Southdown Farm. By looking at the 1889 map on www.old-maps.co.uk/ I have found the farm at 393141,149655, which nowadays is in the middle of the 'Danger Area' on Salisbury Plain. Sadly, looking at the satellite pictures on http://maps.google.co.uk it would appear that the farm has now been completely obliterated by army manoeuvres. I would appreciate any help and/or contact from people with similar interests. Best wishes Kate In Exmouth, Devon, UK

Hi there. I am hoping you can help me as I have hit a brick wall and am at my wits end. I am looking for John STAGG born 1808 Great Bedwyn (Have him in 1841 Census etc married to Maria.) Problem is, I couldn't find him on the IGI and I found a John STAGG born 1807 in Great Bedwyn (said it was incorrectly listed as Trowbridge) to a Sarah STAGG, with the father blank She also has 2 other children, Selina born 1812 and Maurice born 1818. There is a big gap between children, so I am wondering if there are more. I am also wondering if the children would have the same father, or 3 different fathers... I am more interested in John STAGG as he is my ggggf. But I am in Australia so I have no way to go to Wiltshire to check the bastardry books or anything else. Can anyone help or offer any suggestions/opinions? Thanks Jenny in Queensland Australia
Hi Jenny! I have a passing interest in the STAGG family in that an ancestor of mine (Charles VIVASH) married Selina STAGG in Great Bedwyn in 1848. However, I do recall that a whole IGI batch number mistakenly allocates Great Bedwyn events to Trowbridge so if you work from a known Great Bedwyn baptism or marriage which has been mistakenly allocated to Trowbridge and do a batch search under STAGG, you can be sure that all the results shown as Trowbridge should in fact be Great Bedwyn. Thomas Prater born December 1604 in near Eaton Water, Wiltshire is the first Prat(h)er that cam to the "Colonies" and eventually led to my being here 358 years later. His father,Anthony born in Staunton, St Bernard, in Wiltshire around 1545 and mother Judith Ivry (or re) b abt 1550 had four children. Anthony's father George, born 1510 in Inglesham, Wiltshire married Jane Plott (b 1515) These are some of the connections to Wiltshire I have, but they are names and dates, with little history or other context. I was hoping there might be others that were working on the Praters in Wiltshire or the Quintyne, Plott, Ivry, Kingston, Scrope, Carew, Carmonow, DeLa Mere lines in this earlyer part of Wiltshire history. Thank you. Hi Jenny By co-incidence this is some information I extracted on a visit to the Hampshire RO last week and I am sat here looking at many Stagg's at Whitchurch, Hampshire. Which is only 45 kms away from Great Bedwyn. Fiche PR10 3/5 - Marriages, Whitchurch, Hants. 13/03/1858 Page 132 No 263 George Gilbert STAGG 29 Batchelor, Lab. Father: JOHN STAGG, Lab Married Maria TANNER 22 Spinster (Linked to my tree) Father Joseph TANNER Lab Witness 1 George TANNER Witness 2 Sarah Jane TANNER. They had seven children at the last count. There were many who moved to Whitchurch for work on the railways, paper and silk mills. Hope this helps indirectly. If it does then the Hants RO has a complete index of all Whitchurch censuses. Jim North Les Arcs France. Researching, HARRIS, TANNER, WOOLDRIDGE and now STAGG's at Whitchurch, Hants. Maybe NORTH's as well later on. -----Original Message----- From: eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jenny Sent: Friday, September 15, 2006 10:28 AM To: eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Father of John STAGG born 1809 to Sarah STAGG,no father listed??
