    3. Hello Paul I've had a look at the image and there appears to be a small letter after the k in Chalk. On the previous page this looks like a small d but raised above the line of the other letters to suggest that the word has been shortened to Chalk'd Gutter. If you go to the website http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ And enter Downton or Redlynch. When the map comes up enlarge it til you are seeing street names. Maybe if you work your way around the map you might find it You could of course, as you are in England, telephone the Downton Post Office on 01725 512565, or write to them at: Downton Sub Post Office, 30 High Street, Downton, Salisbury, Wilts Good luck with your search Dot, In Salisbury, Wilts On 5/10/06 20:54, "Pam and Paul Gray" <pam@grayfam.wanadoo.co.uk> wrote: > Dear All > > I wonder if the list has any members with a knowledge of the following > place. 3. I continue to research my husband's BATCHELOR ancestors in the Figheldean area, and am wondering if anyone on the list can offer any advice on whether there are any transcripts of the MIs in that graveyard, or whether it would be worth approaching the vicar of the parish to ask if he could tell me who is buried in certain plots. I've already trawled the filmed PRs at my local LDS Centre, so know which names and dates I'm interested in, but am having trouble reconstructing the families, as so many have been given the same names! Any help/advice would be appreciated. 3. Good Morning Delia, I got very excited when I read your posting for Anne and how you found so many of her people on a cd of Wiltshire Baptisms. You mention that it was for 16 parishes South of Swindon. I'm not to sure about the parish set ups but my Wiltshire connections are from Trowbridge. Would this be within your look up capabilities? I am looking for the VENNELL's. Parents, William VENNELL and Eliza (Purnell) VENNELL 1861 census has listed (this info was sent to me so I do not have all the ages or dates.) William VENNELL age 46 Wool Dyer b. Trowbridge Wiltshire Eliza VENNELL age 49 3 daughters (name Rhoda VENNELL b. 1839 Leah VENNELL b. 1842 Ruth VENNELL b. 1846 Son............. John H. VENNELL b. 1854 (my g-grandfather) The address for them in 1861 was Mortimore Street. Would anyone know if this was an in town address, working class neighborhood or country? I also know that they had a brother William VENNELL b. 1837 John H. VENNELL was in the ROYAL NAVY in 1881. I am thirsty for any and all information that can be shared on my English connection. My g-grandfather died in America from a fall in 1904. I have found his death certificate and his grave. Some USA census but little else. My father was his name sake, John H. VENNELL and I was my fathers name sake, Judy Henrietta VENNELL. (No sons, so I got the name. Oh Well!) Both John Henry's died in their 40's so no tales were told to help be build my story. One of the sisters, Leah married James HEWETT in 1867. Any HEWETT'S out there who want to connect with the VENNELL side? On the 1881 census I found the father William VENNELL living with Leah and family. I don't know what happen to Eliza VENNELL. 3. Dear All I wonder if the list has any members with a knowledge of the following place. On the 1871 census, I have found what appears to be one of my GRAY ancestors. The census ref is RG10/1949 page 24 His name is WILLIAM GRAY aged 18 and living as the head with his siblings, Mother LOUISA (MOODY) died in 1865 and I think the father was in Jail. The address looks like CHALK GUTTER, whereas many of the other address'a are down as REDLYNCH. Whilst on holiday in Bournemouth this year, I paid a vist to DOWNTON/REDLYNCH and would love to know if any one knows where CHALK GUTTER is/Might have been. Many Thanks Paul Gray Cheshire

(as my British friend would put it!) I can't beleive that I actually know about Joseph's family now....I thought I would never find out! Thank you for all your "digging". My Reeves family sure had unique names....Meshach, Abednego, Amram, Phineas, Havilah etc..... very biblical actually. I guess it makes them easier to research! On the 1851 Ontario Census of Walsingham Twp., Ontario, Margaret Reeves is missing from the Reeves family "brood", and she is listed a few lines below, as "Margaret Reeves", Widow, Son Thomas 1. I know from the Woodward Family Album that Margaret Reeves did come to Canada and married in 1854. I know that it is "weird" that Margaret would be listed as a "Reeves" if she was widowed, unless....she was a young girl in England who got pregnant out of wedlock and came to Canada where no one knew her and said she was a widow.....speculating...who knows...... If you have the time could you still check for a Margaret Reeves (Reeve) birth or christening?...or maybe you have already. Thanks. Also, you mentioned a Levi Reeves baptism? I do not mean to take advantage of your generosity.....only if you have some spare time in the future. Thanks so much again. I really appreciate your time. Anne from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. P.S. Delia, do you live in England? Thanks again.

The info comes from a cd of Wiltshire Baptisms, 16 parishes south of Swindon, done by the Wiltshire Family History Society. Joanna Reeves, 71, Widow, Independent, is living at Broad Town in 1851.She was born Clyffe Pypard. I think that Manor Boy was in the parish of Broad Town, and was part of their address. There a lot of Reeve, Reeves, baptisms at Clyffe Pypard, including a Levi. Was Margaret Reeves, married to a Reeves, as she was a widow on the census? Hope this helps Delia

I have a book called the "Woodward Family Album" which states that JOSEPH REEVES(REEVE)was born Dec. 28 1802 in BROAD TOWN, so it seems this is Joseph's baptism you found! Thank you. JOSEPH and his wife SOPHIA WOODWARD and children came to Canada in 1845 and settled in Norfolk County, Ontario. I have a partial of the 1852 Charlotteville, Ontario Census and it does list a SHADRACH REEVES, b. England, age 40, Laborer. Shadrach is listed alone and seems to be single with no family. This could be Joseph's brother. There is also an "ABEDNEGO" Reeves, b. England, age 30, Laborer with wife Fanny, 32, Eliza, 7 and Thomas, 5. I checked the 1841 England Census and there is a Shadrach Rowe (if you look at the original document it is "Reeves"), age 30, listed in the Civil Parish of Wroughton, Wiltshire. He is listed alone there. I am curious about the term "Manor Boy" too. I have checked the internet and no definition comes up. Delia, are there any other children listed for LEVI and JOANNA Reeve? I do have the Christenings of Joseph's children but not the birth dates: Christenings: EDWIN (1826), AMRAM (1828), HAVILAH (1830), ANN (1831), PHINEAS (1833), JULIA 1835), ELIZABETH SOPHIA (1837), HENRY PAUL (1840), WILLIAM HUGH (1845) and EMMA (1845). I DO NOT have the christening or birth date of their daughter, MARGARET Reeves (Reeve). One source I have has Margaret born after Elizabeth, Sophia, abt. 1838. In the 1852 Charlottevile, Ontario Census though, Margaret is listed as "Margaret Reeves, age 24, Widow with son Thomas, age 1". If this is correct, Margaret would have been born abt. 1827. Would it be possible to check for Margaret's birth or christening? Thanks a billion. I appreciate any help. Anne

    3. Just another tiny thought... If both brothers were carpenters, there's an excellent chance their father and other relatives were as well. This is the case with my family, where I have five generations of carpenters in England going back to where I lose the records. Most generations had two or three of the sons carpenters, and the daughters also marrying them. The siblings who were not carpenters were complementary trades such as blacksmiths/wheelwrights in the 18th century and then plasterers and painters in the 19th century. A very tightly knit community within their community! It may be worth looking by trade in the later censuses to get an idea of families of carpenter ADLAM's, then following them back to see if there was a sibling John.
