Brian Pigot's English County maps of 1841 show the Great Western Railway going through Wiltshire (via Swindon and Chippenham) to Bath and Bristol (Temple Meads?), and then on down into the West Country. There are no railways shown in Monmouthshire, although the map does show the New Passage ferry. Your ancestors may have travelled: by train to Bristol (30 miles @ 10mph = 3 hours), horse drawn coach/wagon to New Passage (10 miles @ 4 mph = 2.5 hours), They probably stayed the night at Passage House, New Passage. across the Severn Estuary by ferry (rowing boat in those days? 2 to 3 hours), and then on through Monmouthshire and Glamorgan (by horse drawn coach/wagon) on the old road which roughly follows the today's A48 (45 miles @ 5 mph = 9 hours). Hi Lists. An odd question. Please, could someone with old travelling knowledge tell me how an ordinary working person/family would have journeyed from Chippenham in Wiltshire to Laleston near Bridgend in Glamorgan in 1848/49? Also, if possible, roughly how long would it have been been likely to take. Thanking you in advance. Brian
Hello List Has anyone any information on John Lawes who was living in Martin in 1841, age 75? My William Lawes born circa 1801 was the son of Alice Hort who was unmarried. She is living with William and his family in 1841 and 1851 - shown as widow ! She is enumerated as HART - I have no knowledge of her, only what I have been told, which is that she was HORT, daughter of William Hort and Mary who was nee Fry, and Mary Fry's mother was also Mary. These events are supposed to have occurred in Martin. So I am wondering if John was possibly the father of William? Has anyone a baptism for William either as Lawes or (which I would think is more likely) as Hort or Hart? Thanks Bev

Hello List Has anyone a connection to or information on William Lawes born in Martin, circa 1826 (from 1841 census) son of William Lawes and Mary Upjohn? Until this morning I believed him to be married to Sarah Harris, now that I know that he wasn't, a chunk of my tree is no longer mine!! I cannot find him in any later census so suspect he may have died between 1841 and 1851. Thanks Bev
Hi I'm trying to find out more information about my 3xgreatgrandparents William and Sarah Rivers. They are shown in the 1841 census for Netheravon with sons Henry & William. I can't find William(snr) or Sarah in the 1861 census. Regards Colin Wilson
Hi, I have an interest in the surname SHAVE; Our Harriet Shave married our ancestor James Corbin in Christchurch 1811. They had at least two sons Joseph born 1811 and Henry 1821 both born Christchurch. There were probably more. Harriet died before 1833 and James remarried. But we are trying to find out more about Harriet SHAVE. Have you come across her? best wishes Lin ----- Original Message ----- From: <dave@corksimpson.plus.com> To: <ENG-WILTSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 2:27 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] George Button from Christchurch to Salisbury,Wiltshire. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EUC.2ACI/3187.1.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > George Button bQ4 1841 Christchurch, > m Q2 1882 Christchurch > to Eliza Maria Shave bQ3 1841 Christchurch > > son George Button bQ1 1884 Christchurch, > mQ4 1907 Ringwood > to Ellen Lawford bQ2 1881 Ringwood, Hampshire, dQ2 1922 Salisbury, Wilts. > (see link below for loads on her) > > George+Eliza and George Jnr are in the 1901 census with the surname > transcribed as Budden > The transcription has them living in Martas Hill Lane, Burton, Christ > Church East so they are probably in the same house. > To clarify all these errors, Martin's Hill Lane is in Burton which is just > to the East of Christchurch which is now in Dorset but was in Hampshire > (aka Hants). > The transcription does give good detail on birthplaces with both Georges > born in Burton and Eliza born in Bransgore (another small place a little > further east than Burton) > > http://awt.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=giblaw&id=I19&ti=5538 > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-WILTSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.3/473 - Release Date: 12/10/2006 > >

Hi Folks, Greetings from Toronto, Canada. Elisha LAWRENCE, the youngest son of George LAWRENCE and Anne APPLEFORD, was born in Hilmarton, Wilts, England, in 1778. Elisha and Susannah had issue: a. John LAWRENCE, born about 1800, who married Sarah TAYLOR in Hilmarton, where they lived and had issue; b. Isaac LAWRENCE, born about 1802; c. Richard LAWRENCE, born about 1804; d. Elizabeth LAWRENCE, born about 1807; buried in Hilmarton in 1808; e. Charles LAWRENCE, born about 1809; Charles married Honor ????; they lived in Hilmarton and in London, where they had issue; f. Elizabeth LAWRENCE, born about 1814; buried in Hilmarton in 1829. I am anxious to contact any researcher or relation of this family and to exchange LAWRENCE family history notes on them. I have oodles and oodles of material on the LAWRENCE ancestors and laterals of this family. Best wishes. Peter.
