    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Which Mary Ann MAY: 1901 census look-up please
    2. Jenny Davis
    3. Hello Listers, In 1892 2ndQ my cousin Daniel DAVIS, b.1858, re-married at Atworth to a Mary Ann MAY (ref: Bradford-on-Avon 5a/239). I have more than one possibility for Mary Ann, so I must get the marriage certificate to try to resolve the question of which one, but if SKS could look-up the 1901 census return to get Mary Ann's age, that too could resolve it. I suspect the couple were living in Corsham, or nearby, and Mary Ann would be about the same age as Daniel (43), and was probably born in Corsham, Wiltshire. Names of any children would be interest too. I suspect that Mary Ann had a child, perhaps Hubert, before the marriage so her 1891 census return would also be very informative (and rumour has it that her husband to-be, Daniel Davis, was the father, so Mary Ann just might have taken the name Davis even before her 1892 marriage). Thanks, Jenny

The only real information I have is that it was originally known as "Davis, May & Co" and first appeared in Kelly's Directory in 1911; and changed name sometime between then and 1919, to The Neston Glove Factory. 3. Hi Susan - not sure if you have had a response but according to an online tree, Edward may be the son of Charles CRICKMAY and Jane SMART whose marriage is recorded on IGI as 1820 in Hindon, Wiltshire. Given the names of the children of John and Jane, John may be a brother or uncle. The same tree tentatively gives Edward's death as 1865, St Margarets. The Bethnal Green death in 1862 appears to have another entry on the same reference number - Anne Blanche CRICKMAY - not sure what this implies. You may have all this already - do you have your folk in other censuses? I don't see Edward after 1841 so far and cannot find Eliza in 1861 either. I could not see any reference to Edward on the National Archives site but there might be a military record there for him which is not yet mentioned online. Sorry not to be more help. 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] ESTCOURT and RICHMOND alias WEBB, also STEEDE and MOODIE/MOODY
    2. Richard Carruthers a.k.a. Carruthers-Zurowski
    3. In tracing my Wiltshire ancestry, I have found a number of links with Tetbury. One such is the ESTCOURT family. According to "Richmond Family Records", vol. 2, p. 108, my forebear William RICHMOND alias WEBB of Battersea and Lydiard Millicent (Wilts) was the son of Ambrose RICHMOND als. WEBB and his wife Emma daughter of George ESTCOURT, gent., of Tetbury. The relevant documentary evidence is given: "By indenture dated 31 October 44 Eliz (1602) between William WEBB and John ESCOURTE of Tetbury and Edmund MASKELYNE of Pyrton (Purton, Wilts.) in consideration of a marriage to be had between Ambrose WEBB naturall son of the said William and Emma ESCOURTE one of the daughters of George ESCOURTE of Tetbury and of 100 marks, William WEBB granted to John and Edmund in trust meadow and pasture ground in Lyddiard Millicent (Lydiard Millicent, Wilts.) called the Hydes, of 20 acres and meadows or pasture ground called the Great or Further Lye, etc." There are several candidates in the various ESTCOURT pedigrees I have seen to be my George ESTCOURT. Judging from the date of the marriage settlement for his daughter's marriage to Ambrose in the very early part of the 17th century, it would appear that George was living at the end of the 16th century. Apparently Emma was one of several daughters, but I do not know their names, or whether she had any brothers, though one wonders if the John mentioned in the marriage settlement mightn't be one of them if her father George were already dead... My current theory posits that she may have been a daughter of a George ESTCOURT who was a churchwarden of Tetbury in 1594 according to Lee's "History of Tetbury" (p. 292, col. 2, George ESTCOURTE). Examining gleanings I have found in various sources I have constructed a possible family of origin for Emma, viz.: Johan ESTCORTE, of Westport, Wilts. widow is named in a Chancery Suit answer of 12 Feb. 1594/5 and appears in "Richmond Family Records", vol. 2, p. 55 as Johan ESTCORTE, a widow, who by an earlier marriage to John MOODY, of Westport (d. 4 Mar. 1549/50, IPM 6 Feb. 1550/1; see Visitation of Wilts., 1623, pp. 136-137, MOODIE de Westport pedigree) had a daughter Elizabeth who married Anthony RICHMOND alias WEBB of Manningford Bohim, Wilts. (who happens to have been Ambrose R als W's uncle). So sometime after the death of MOODY, Johan married an ESTCOURT (ESTCORTE) and was widowed again by 12 Feb. 1594/5, which is just in the nick of time to make it possible for her to have been the wife of George ESTCOURT churchwarden of Tetbury in 1594, though it does not prove this. In the ESCOURT pedigree in the Visitation of Glos., 1623, p. 57, a George ESTCOURT, no residence given, is said to have married "Joane daughter of ... STEEDE". Their issue is only shown as two sons: Edmond ESTCOURT who married Mary daughter of BERNARD and, perhaps significantly in regard to the marriage settlement, John ESTCOURT who married Grace daughter of LYGGON. So things seem to be hinting at the possibility that Johan former wife of John MOODY or MOODIE, of Westport, Malmesbury, and later widow of one ESTCORTE, was identical with Joane STEEDE who married George ESTCOURT. If this is the case, then it is another step to prove that the George ESCOURTE of the 1602 marriage settlement who is father of Emma is indeed the same man as the George ESTCOURT who married Joane STEEDE. The Glos. Vis. pedigree of ESTCOURT shows that this latter George ESTCOURT was the 3rd son of Edmond de la ESTCOURT and his wife Praxid [Praxed/Praxeda] daughter of William BUTTON of ... in com. Wilts. I already happen to descend from this BUTTON family [of Alton Priors, Wilts.] via my ERNLE descent, so this would be an interesting instance of further loss of ancestry through distant cousin marriage, an occurrence which was probably altogether common among the rural gentry of the 16th and 17th centuries. Any thoughts or input welcomed. Many thanks, Richard Richard Carruthers, M.A. (Oxon.) Vancouver British Columbia CANADA _________________________________________________________________

    3. Hello All In the will (dated 1807) of my great (x4) grandfather George Baker he mentions his wife Catherine and his three children George, Charles and Catherine. The WFHS disc for Berwick St James has the baptisms for all three children. The problem is that the later lists the parents as George and Mary, not George and Catherine. My first thought was that the wife/mother was Catherine Mary or Mary Catherine. I cannot find any confirmation of this. Any thoughts from my fellow listers would be much appreciated. Richard

    1. Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Re Osman/Wooseman Family of Chiseldon Nr SwindonWilts-Attention Standlye Robert Archer
    2. Leonie Fretwell
    3. I too have been researching Osmans. The extract below is from my Osman Story. Generation 1 William Osman The earliest records found to date for the Osman family of Chisledon are those of William Osman who died 1737/38 and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. Whether the couple were born and/or spent their childhood in Chisledon has not been established but it has been suggested that they had moved to the village by the time of the baptism of their son William in 1704, but no record of William’s baptism has been found as yet. The baptism of two other sons – James and Robert – are recorded in the parish register as having occurred respectively in 1704 and 1711. Whether any other children were been born to William and Elizabeth is not known. Two burial records for Chisledon may be those of William Osman and Elizabeth Osman. The entry for William is written up as William Snr (with the alternative surname of Oseman) for 27th February 1738. That for Elizabeth is for 21st July 1722, and carried the notation ‘w. William’. I have three sons attributed to William and Elizabeth (née) – William (who married Elizabeth Webb), James, and Robert (who married Ruth Parker). Generation 2 William Osman The information for William (Osman or Oseman) has yet to be substantiated. His wife may have been Elizabeth Webb, and if so they married on 17th February 1724 at Chisledon. There is a Chisledon burial record for a William Osman aged 84 for 27th January 1788, which fits neatly with William’s estimated date of birth. Perhaps Richard was a son of William and Elizabeth (née Webb)and a grandson of William and Elizabeth (née ?)
