    3. When the Wills Project site first came on line i had excellent and very fast service from the Wilts Archives who photocopied and posted many wills and associated documents to me by return of post. This project is really a flagship one and a tremendous help to researchers...it really helped me with mine as i got two wills late 17thC. As wills are so hard to locate from a distance, and sometimes even in a record office, it is so unusual to find such a comprehensive indexing project. Considering that the Borthwick Institute has the wills for the whole of the North of England and they chare £10 for paper copies and take up to 28 days to send them. Wiltshire Archives are very realistic at £5 for an instant copy or less for a posted paper copy. Considering the potential leads in wills £5 is a reasonable price to pay for an instant download. The revenue will undoubtably be put to good use enabling more records to go online. Admittadly there are some digitisation projects that are free...the most notable is the Medway Ark project which has all the OPRs and more for free. But the more that goes on line the better for all. 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Cost of Wilts Wills online defended
    2. Terry Waters-Marsh
    3. Dear Mike, Without knowing anything about the funding arrangements of the Wilts Wills online, I can defend the cost of providing an item online, irrespective of how the digital images were funded. The cost is in creating an online facility and then paying for the dedicated server capacity to permit online access. Servers are NOT free and are, indeed, quite costly to rent or buy. As such, a fiver per will seems very reasonable. The ScotlandsPeople Wills project cost GBP3.5 when it first went online about 5 years ago and it lost money until it was taken over by another subscription service, despite the digitalisation being funded by the Lottery and the work being donated by the GSU and the Scotland Archives. Looking at it in another way - can you travel to the Wiltshire Record Office, locate the will, copy it and then travel home for less than GBP5? If so, then I would encourage you to do so. 3. Your last statement about travelling to Wilts records office is absolutely ridicalous, In your first paragraph you make the statement you don't know anything about funding arrangements, then you start defending them. With people like about whats the point. You seem to have the "I am alright Jack" philosophy, personaly I care about ensuring that everyone has access to historical material and making sure that the cost if it is necassary is kept low. Anyway you obviously dont know anything about the cost of running a site of this magnitude, it is very low in cost. So there is no need to charge these extortionate prices. Family History is becoming more expensive every month, as more and more of our history is being handed over to private companies, if you want to defend the great British sell off that is up to you. Quite frankly I believe history belongs to us all not to people who can afford it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terry Waters-Marsh" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 10:42 PM Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Cost of Wilts Wills online defended Dear Mike, Without knowing anything about the funding arrangements of the Wilts Wills online, I can defend the cost of providing an item online, irrespective of how the digital images were funded. 3. Dear Marilyn & my other helpers, I have gone through all the information you have kindly sent. As Lily was with Amos Middleton & his family when she was aged 8 & then aged 18 in 1901 with a daughter of Amos, Mary Ann ( aged 5 in 1871) & 25 when married in 1901, I am certain that she must fit into this family somewhere. As her birth parents are not given she must be illegitimate---the daughter of a son before his marriage & then not wanted by his wife, the daughter of a daughter of Amos or the daughter of a son's wife born before she married a Middleton. The latter might be a good answer if his wife's maiden name was WILLIAMS.I haven't worked out where Lily's 3rd Christian name came from. If any Wilts member who reads this lives near Chippenham & could go into the Record Office I would certainly pay them to do this. I would just like a check made of the baptismal register for Minety 1882 ish to see if Lily was baptised & any parents names given. If all else fails hopefully a birth cert would name a parent. 3. Further to this, I now think Frederick's name is actually SIMPSON and there is a Leah SIMPSON born Sandhurst 1865 in the 1881 census which matches Leah's details in 1891. Leah SIMPSON married Walter George MIDDLETON in 1885, reg Highworth. Does not help with the matter of Lilly but just clarifies Leah and Frederick's identity.
