Any advice out there regarding my ggrandmother. The last documentation I have for her is in the 1901 census (housekeeper in Berkshire) I can't find her in the 1911 census or any marriage or death records - my grandmother didn't know her as she was brought up by her mother's sister. She had 2 illegitimate daughters one born 1888 and my grandmother born 1890. Name is Bessie Sturgess born Bulford 1865. I would appreciate any advice as to where I should search! Thanks, Di Moulden Auckland New Zealand
Yes, I think this happens quite often, even on censuses. My grandmother was Anna Sarah Maria, known by her brothers as Cissie. And that is how she appears in some of the census returns. I would appreciate any advice as to where I should search! It's possible her name's been mangled in transcription. You can do wild card searches on FMP's 1911-census site but not on FMP's (AFAIK). You could try looking for her by her given name and year of birth without a surname or place/county of birth to see if a fairly obvious mangled surname jumps out at you. A similar process for finding her death would work on either FreeBMD or Ancestry. Since Bessie is one of the many alternatives for Elizabeth, try looking for her as that. An employer or informant may have decided Bessie was a pet name and should be Elizabeth, rather than it being her actual registered given name. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/
My thanks to everyone who responded regarding Holy Trinity and St James Churchyards. I'm still looking for James ISLEY's burial site. Best regards, Karen Isley Seiferth Ft Myers, FL
Hi David, I don't believe I can help you with your particular BRYANT search; but similar to yourself, I am trying to locate the birth and ancestry of a Robert BRYANT who was my GGGrandfather. All I know is that he was living in Bristol at the time of the 1841 Census where he is recorded as born c1814 'not in county'. Unfortunately, he didn't live to the 1851 census where I might have got his actual place of birth. As part of your BRYANT research, if you should stumble across such a person, I'd love to hear from you. I could then fill you in on his descendents. Regards, Don Bryant
I am new to this list and am hoping for any information about the BRYANT family who were in Great Wishford in the 19th Century. Have found them on Census records and have manged to find what seems to be two distinct families. I am trying to link these families but without much success. I have George (1826) son of James (1791) in my line. There is also George (1831) son of John (1809) , son of William (1773). Any help or suggestions of sources for further research would be appreciated, Thanks David Thomas
I am seeking to make contact, and to share CHISMAN family history notes, with any descendant or researcher of the family of my ancestor, James CHISMAN senior. James CHISMAN, senior, [the name Cheesman was corrected to Chisman in the baptismal register] was born approximately 1774, and baptized in East Knoyle in 1775. In 1808, in East Knoyle church, he married Martha SANGER. James senior was a yeoman farmer of East Knoyle. James died in 1844, aged 70 and was buried in East Knoyle; the will of James CHISMAN, gentleman of East Knoyle, proved in 1845, is available at the Wilts and Swindon History Centre. Martha died in 1839, aged 58 years and was buried with m.i. in East Knoyle. James senior and Martha had issue, including: 1. William CHISMAN, baptized in East Knoyle in 1810. William was enumerated in the East Knoyle 1841 census as a farmer and his father James as an independent man. In 1842, in Tisbury district, he married Hannah BROTHERS. They first farmed in Charlton Tything, where William was a farmer of 646 acres in Standlynch, Wilts. In the 1850s, they moved to Upavon Farm House, Upavon, Wilts, where William was a farmer of 815 acres. Hannah died in Pewsey district, in Q1 of 1862; William’s death, aged 63, was registered in Pewsey district in Q2 of 1873. William and Hannah had issue. 2. John CHISMAN, baptized in East Knoyle in 1811. In 1837, in St. Denys, Warminster, John married Louisa KNIGHT. John and Louisa farmed in Stockton and, from the late 1840s, in Codford St. Peter, Wilts. John, aged 64, was buried in Codford St. Peter in 1875. Louisa died, aged 75, in 1886, in Warminster district. John and Louisa had issue. 3. James CHISMAN, junior, baptized in East Knoyle in 1816. In 1843, in West Knoyle church, he married Ann RUMSEY. James junior was a yeoman farmer of 520 acres in Lushill, near Castle Eaton (census of 1851); by the census of 1861, James 42 was a farmer in Pewsey; lastly, James was a farmer of 1,103 acres in Winterborne Bassett (census of 1871), all in Wiltshire. James was buried (m.i.) in Winterborne Bassett, Wilts, in 1876, aged 60; Ann, a widow, was buried in St. Michael’s church, Wilsford, Wilts, (m.i.) in May 2nd., 1883, aged 63. James junior and Ann had issue. Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.

I am seeking to make contact, and to share RUMSEY family history notes, with any descendant or researcher of the family of my ancestor, John RUMSEY. John RUMSEY senior (c1699 – 1775) lived in West Knoyle, Wiltshire, England. The Rumseys were yeoman farmers in that village and occupied Manor Farm from approximately 1765 till about 1880. We have a West Knoyle monument inscription documenting the name of his wife, Elizabeth. Baptismal records of his two youngest sons were entered in the parish registers. In addition, I infer that John RUMSEY junior was an older son whose baptism was not recorded in the West Knoyle PR. The will of John RUMSEY senior, which was written about 1768/9, mentions only two sons, John junior and William; John RUMSEY senior died and was buried in West Knoyle in 1775, aged 76; his will was proved in 1775 - it is available at the Wilts and Swindon History Centre. Elizabeth died in 1754, aged 68. John RUMSEY senior and Elizabeth had issue: A. John RUMSEY junior, born c1723. In 1748, in Stourton, Wilts, John RUMSEY of Little Knoyle married Ann CHISMAN of Great Knoyle. Some time after 1766 some or all of this family moved to East Knoyle. John RUMSEY junior died in 1805, aged 82, and was buried in East Knoyle. Anne RUMSEY was buried there in 1797. John and Ann had issue. B. Barnabas RUMSEY, baptized in 1727 in West Knoyle. Barnabas died in 1742 and was buried in West Knoyle, aged 16. C. William RUMSEY, baptized in 1730 in West Knoyle. In 1756, in West Knoyle church, he married Martha WIGMORE, spinster, of East Knoyle. William was a yeoman farmer; from 1765, he farmed Manor Farm in West Knoyle. William was buried in West Knoyle in 1784; his will was proved in 1786 is available at the Wilts and Swindon History Centre. Martha, his widow, was buried in West Knoyle in 1792; she was aged 65; her will was proved in 1793 - it is also available at the Wilts and Swindon History Centre. William and Martha had issue. Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.
Holy Trinity and St James are both in Trowbridge. Strangely, Google Maps doesn't display either church if you ask it to search for them; it does show a health club in the old St James's Church Hall. The link below should show you the 'walking' route between the two churches, a distance of around 0.4 miles. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Fore+St&daddr=51.3211661, -2.21026+to:Unknown+road&geocode=FcwYDwMdKFDe_w%3BFU4ZDwMdLEbe_yktW8ut9tVzSD Fh2datLa4OEw%3BFYQODwMdxTXe_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=17&via=1&dirflg =w&sll=51.320468,-2.210505&sspn=0.004915,0.013894&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17 St James is just to the north of the business called 'Howard Travel' and Holy Trinity just to the west of Oasis Dental Care. Is there some kind soul, out there, who can help me with the family and descendants, if any, of my lateral, Sarah WILKINS. Sarah WILKINS, was born about 1761 / 1762, probably in Northern Wilthsire, baptismal record yet to be located. Her siblings were born / baptized in Bremhill and in Clyffe Pyppard, both in Northern Wiltshire. She was mentioned in her father’s will of 1803. On March 25th., 1799, in Leigh Delamere, Wilts, Sarah married John Power WEARE / WARE. In the 1841 census, for Devizes, Wiltshire, Sarah WARE 79, independent, was living in the household of her brother, Robert WILKINS 67, with her sister, Mary LAWRENCE 64, widow. Any assistance, with this branch of my WILKINS tree, would be most gratefully received. Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.
