    3. Saturday 18 Oct 1845 (p. 3, col. 6) INQUESTS. ----- (Before Mr. LEE, Deputy Coroner.) On the 14th instant, at Longpark, in the parish of Scaleby, on the body of a man whose name was unknown. Deceased was a stout young man, apparently about 35 years of age, who has been of late wandering round the country without any apparent object, evidently of unsound mind, and in a very filthy state of person. In answer to questions he said his name was MATTHEWS, that he was from Cowhill, in the parish of Kirkbride. On Friday night he called at Mr. DALTON's, of Stone Knowe, in the same parish, who kindly gave him his supper, and made a bed up for him in the stable. He remained at Mr. DALTON's until the afternoon of the following day, and after having had his dinner, he left in the direction of Longpark. About six o'clock in the evening he called at the house of James LAZONBY, of Longpark, a labourer, whose wife very humanely gave him his supper and made up a bed for him in an out-house. He returned to the house about nine o'clock on the following morning, apparently in his usual health. Up to this time he had not complained of any illness. He sat down, and in the course of a few minutes fell into a state of stupor. He lingered until the evening, when he died. A medical gentleman was called in, but his assistance was unavailing. Upon deceased's head were several marks and bruises, but not of so serious a nature as to induce the surgeon to believe they were at all tending to the cause of death. He was of opinion that deceased died of apoplexy, and the Jury returned a verdict accordingly. None of deceased's friends had arrived to claim the body when the inquest was holden, and the parish authorities intended to inter the corpse on the following day. (Before Mr. THOMPSON, Coroner for Westmoreland.) At the Greyhound Inn, Little Strickland, on Friday, the 10th inst., on the body of Daniel GIBSON, alias GIBBINS, fron [sic] the neighbourhood of Wigton, and about 36 years of age. Deceased was a railway navigator, and had been employed in blasting limestone rock at Scalegill, near Shap Beckgate, and had retired along with other workmen to a distance of 93 yards on the usual signal that a blast was going to be fired, being given. A stone, from the explosion, weighing 23lbs., was hurled against him, striking him on his right side, below the ribs, with such violence as to cause death in an hour afterwards. Verdict-"Acdidental [sic] death."
