The CHAIRMAN said-Gentlemen of the Grand Jury, the Court has much pleasure in congratulating you on a very light calendar-a circumstance very creditable to the county. I am sure we have known at these sessions, three or four times as many prisoners for trial. The calendar is light in point of extent, and the nature of the cases-with, perhaps, the exception of one case of cattle stealing, a serious offence no doubt-one of the most serious you will have. But I am happy to say that it is a case which appears to present no difficulties when it comes before you, because it, and the majority of the cases will be sought to be proved in the usual manner, the prosecutor missing his property, which was traced some time afterwards to the possession of the prisoner. When such proofs shall be established it will be your duty to send in a true bill. After directing the jury how to proceed with some minor cases, they retired. The printed calendar contained a list of thirteen prisoners, of which two were set down as being able to read and write well, seven imperfectly, and four as ignorant of both reading and writing. COUNSEL PRESENT.-Messrs. GREIG, RAMSHAY, MORLAND, BELL, DYKES, LAWRIE, OLIPHANT. Mr. RAMSHAY and Mr. BELL apologised for appearing without their usual badges-wig and gown,-owing to some accident.
