In English Street, on Wednesday the 8th inst., John JAMES, Esq., in the 74th year of his age. Mr. JAMES was almost universally known throughout the North of England, having commenced his professional career as a surgeon nearly fifty years ago; and by industry, integrity, and superior attainments, raised himself to a position such as few men, in country practice, attain. At the Bush Hotel, English Street, on Thursday morning, Isabella, wife of Mr. James HAMILTON, aged 34 years. In St. Cuthbert's Lane, on Sunday, the 5th instant, Mrs. Elizabeth CRAIG, aged 64 years. In Key's Lane, Scotch Street, William M'BETH, watch maker, aged 38. At the Castle, in this city, on the 6th instant, William RAY, soldier, aged 24 years. At Arcob, in the East Indies, on the 16th of June last, after a day's illness of cholera, Alexander, second son of Mr. James STEPHEN, compositor, late of this city, in his 30th year. At the Lodge, Petteril Bank, on the 1st inst., Mary SWALLOW, aged 12 years,-much respected. At Great Corby, on the 7th instant, after a long illness, Mr. Anthony WILSON, aged 54 years. At Wigton, on the 5th ult., Mr. John GLAISTER, aged 62. At Cliburn, on the 7th instant, Margaret Mc.DONELL, after a lingering illness,-much and deservedly respected through life. At the Goat, near Cockermouth, on Wednesday the 8th inst., the wife of Mr. William WILKINSON, Lowther's Arms inn, aged 26 years. At Bongate, Appleby, on Wednesday last, Thomas HARRISON, advanced in years. At Kirkcudbright, on the 6th instant, by drowning, Mr. R. CUNNINGHAM, farmer, Nether Bosland. At Alston, on the 6th inst., aged 19, John DAGLISH, son of the late Mr. William DAGLISH, cabinet maker, Newcastle; same day, aged 17, Thomas, son of Mr. Thomas LITTLE, blacksmith. At Penrith, on the 5th instant, Jane, the wife of Mr. Robert LEWTHWAITE, shoemaker, aged 50 years; on the 6th, Mr. James JOHNSON, blacksmith, aged 68 years; Mr. Joseph MASON, joiner, aged 70 years. At his son-in-laws, Mr. KIRKHAUGH's Aspatria, on the 6th instant, Mr. John PIGNEY [PINGNEY according to FreeBMD], late of Bewaldeth, in his 80th year. At Hutton, near Hutton John, in the Parish of Greystoke, on the the [sic] 28th ult., Thomas TODHUNTER, yeoman, in the 88th year of his age. From youth to old age he was a staunch advocate of the cause of reformation. He was an obliging neighbour, an affectionate husband, and an indulgent father; and for integrity and talent there were few to equal him in the sphere of life in which he moved. He was followed to the grave by a numerous train of friends and acquaintances deeply and sincerely regretted.
