JOHNSTONE, blacksmith, whose death was occasioned by her setting fire to her clothes in a neighbour's house, where she had gone with other children, whilst her parents were engaged in the harvest field. Verdict-"Accidental death."-At Geltstone Gate, in the extra-parochial district of Geltsdale Forest, on Friday, the 3rd instant, on the body of Samuel NICHOLSON, aged 27 years, a hewer in Mr. THOMPSON's coal pit, at Blacksyke, who was killed by the fall of a large stone from the roof of the pit, whereby his head was fractured to a frightful extent. Verdict-"Accidental death." Saturday 11 Oct 1845 (p. 3, col. 8) INQUEST IN WESTMORELAND.-An inquest was held on Wednesday last, at the house of Mr. R. JACKSON, Carting Gill, before Mr. George THOMPSON, on the body of George LONG. Deceased was a labourer on the Lancaster and Carlisle line of railway, and on the day previous to the inquest was engaged along with his son in blasting rock at a place called Whitestones, Burrow Bridge, when unfortunately from some unknown cause while stemming a charge, the powder exploded, and a piece of rock struck him on the forehead and produced a large fracture of the skull; his right arm was also broken. He survived the accident but a few minutes. Verdict, "Accidental death."-Deceased was a native of Staveley, Westmoreland, and 49 years of age. He was a widower, and has left seven children behind him to lament his fate: six, however, we are happy to say, are able to maintain themselves. His second marriage was to have taken place within a few days with a young woman, the banns having been published three times in the church. The son was also so much injured from the explosion that he was unable to attend the inquest.
