    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News - 20-Apr-1883 Serious Gunpowder Explosion An explosion of a serious character occurred on the 12th, at the works of the New Sedgwick Gunpowder Co, near Kendal. About noon on Tuesday, in the cartridge house, three men were engaged, namely ARTHUR CHEESEMAN, HENRY CHEESEMAN, and JAMES SHEPHERD. The mill exploded in a terrific manner, the shock being heard at a great distance, while the flash illuminated the whole neighbourhood. The three men were found in a greatly injured state. DR. LEEMING, of Kendal, and other medical gentlemen quickly attended and everything possible was done for them. ARTHUR CHEESEMAN who is a married man, with two children and JAMES SHEPHERD were reported in a most precarious condition, and at four o'clock in the afternoon there were no hopes whatever of their recovery. The other Cheeseman died early on Saturday morning. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net
