STRAY NOTES. Broadly speaking, it may be quite true, as TENNYSON says, that "through the ages one increasing purpose runs," and that "the thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns," but in Cumberland the old narrow guage of the great grandfatherly era is still adhered to. The other week there should have been a grand cock-fight in Westmorland, but the police were too near the promoters, and they had to take refuge in the adjoining county of Cumberland where the main was fought. Cumberland likes this sort of refined recreation. The superintendent of police for that county says that "one half of the time of his men is taken up in preventing cock-fighting."
