Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Death of JOHN PEILL Issue #110 28 April 1882 Page 4 Deaths On the 26th inst., at Ambleside, JOHN PEEL*, aged -- years * The name in the newspaper is John Peel, but was probably John Peill as given in the Military funeral reported in issue number 111 (see below). Also, the Free BMD site shows a John Peill, but no John Peel in the deaths for Kendal District June Quarter 1882. Issue #111 05 May 1882 Page 4 Military Funeral at Ambleside Last week we recorded the death of JOHN PEILL on 26th April. Deceased was of Ambleside as was his father and grandfather both of whom carried on the business of hooper. Deceased learned a bit of the hooper trade before emigrating to Australia where he remained thirteen years returning home in March of 1866. Shortly after his return he joined the 5th Company (Ambleside) Westmorland Rifle Volunteers and remained a member of the corps up to his death. Funeral took place last Saturday with full military honors including Capt. Gatey of Grasmere Company. The assembled company consisted of one officer, four sergeants, 12 bandsmen and 32 rank and file. The firing party consisted of a corporal and 12 men under the command of COL. SERGT. CREIGHTON. Burial service read by REV. A.E. RIDDLE of Rydal. Last time such a service was performed was 19-Aug-1873 for GEO. HOLMES who drowned in Lake Windermere and was a member of the Ambleside corps.
