Thank yo so much John for all the information you have provided as it certainly has moved things along a bit. Cheers Colleen ----- Original Message ---- From: John Steel Genealogy <fh@johnsteel.co.uk> To: eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, 30 August, 2008 5:37:05 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] George AIREY Colleen I have George Airey aged 5 in the 1841 census, living at Middle Plumbgarths, Strickland Kettle, Parents John 40 and Betty 40 , John was a farmer and not born in Westmorland. All children born in Middle Plumbgarths Betty 12 James 10 Thomas 7 George 5 Robert 2 George a Carter and Emma were married by 1861 and had a Daughter Elizabeth aged 1 and living at Dandy Row , Holme Westmorland, Emma was from Beetham, Yorkshire. Emma was born Circa 1832. By 1871 George and Emma had moved to Duke Street, Kirkby Lonsdale and George was still a Carter. There is no sign of Elizabeth, 11 would have been early to leave home but not impossible. There is an Elizabeth of the right age living as a servant in Milnethorpe who was born in Holme and I suspect this was her. Ema is there aged 9 and born in Holme Also born in Holme are John 7, Henry 5 and Agnes 2. George Airey appears to have married Emma Smith in Kendal in 1859, The marriage certificate would confirm if this marriage was indeed theirs. By 1881 George and Emma are back in Holme and George is now a Stone Mason.. Emma the daughter is with them aged 19 as is Agnes now aged 12. Additions are Mary S aged 9 and Margaret aged 7 also there are Granddaughter Margaret aged 3 months and Grandson George aged 3. Also there is niece Jane E Kitchen aged 23, so I can see where the Kitchen connection comes in, do you think that is Emma's family side or possibly Georges sisters child. If Emma's side then the marriage record may not be theirs and there could be another one. The one thing that concerns me is that George appears to have changed occupation, in 1861 and 1871 he was a Carter but in 1881 he was a Stone Mason, not impossible of course but needs to be checked, all the other details are too close a match for it to be anyone else really. George does not appear in the 1891 so I assume he must have died by then as he would have been 55 by then, nor does Emma who would have been 59. Hopefully that will give you enough to start work.
