I've been half-following the various threads relating to visiting Carlisle but as the subject line doesn't really tell much (yes folks, if the subject of a thread changes the subject line should change as well!) I'm starting a new thread which probably covers some of what has been discussed... I will be visiting Cumbria in mid-September and hope to spend one day doing parish record and other research but I'm not quite sure where the records will be. The earliest records (1700-1750) will be the BURN family from Alston, Cumberland but one generation later they are around Temple Sowerby, Westmorland and nearby areas of Cumberland. Will all these records be at Carlisle or do I have to go somewhere else for the Westmorland records? I'd also like some advice on the best day/time of day to use the relevant records offfice(s). -- ==== Michael Lightfoot Canberra, Australia OPC Merther & St Clement, Cornwall see http://www.cornwall-opc.org michael.lightfoot@pcug.org.au ====

For Westmorland at least, the GENUKI Westmorland parish pages show the availability of known records, e.g. for Temple Sowerby they state: "The parish records and BTs are held at the Kendal Record Office of Cumbria Archives Service. The Record Office reference is WPR81." http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/index.html The Cumbria Archive Service has an online catalogue; the results for each reference will show which repository the material is held at, and if there are any special access conditions. http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/Online_catalogues/default.asp http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/default.asp Regards, Jeremy

I have duly rapped myself on the knuckles and will now do as you suggest. > For Westmorland at least, the GENUKI Westmorland parish pages show the > availability of known records, e.g. for Temple Sowerby they state: "The > parish records and BTs are held at the Kendal Record Office of Cumbria > Archives Service. Another lister did suggest that Kendal may have copies of a goodly proportion of the Cumberland records so I might do Kendal first and then Carlisle as a secondary trip if I have time. -- ==== Michael Lightfoot Canberra, Australia OPC Merther & St Clement, Cornwall see http://www.cornwall-opc.org michael.lightfoot@pcug.org.au ====
