thank you for your response. Yes John was supposedly born in Bampton around 1820 and her father was called William. But on family search website I can find their marriage 1844 in Appleby but I cannot fine his birth anywhere. I can find Margaret's birth documented but not John's.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Could it be that John and Margaret were the same ones living in Storth Appleby in 1871, in which case John was born Bampton Westmorland in about 1820. Living with 8 children and one granddaughter. If it is the same Margaret she would have been born around 1828 possibly the one christened 6 Jan 1828 daughter of William and Margaret. I will have to get my information out and see if there is any connection with my tree. This is information given to me by a distant relation Jenny Steel. Lancelot was the brother of George Steel and I descend from that line.
