NORTH OF ENGLAND TEMPERANCE LEAGUE. On Saturday evening the proceedings connected with the 38th annual conference of the North of England Temperance League were commenced at Penrith, and will be continued until Wednesday. Delegates were present from nearly 150 towns and villages in Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Durham, besides representatives of temperance organisations in Scotland, the Midlands, and the south of England. The report of the executive committee states that there has been no slackening in any branch of the work during the year, and that in every direction throughout the north of England at least there is an awakening to the fact that, unless the liquor traffic is prohibited, it will become the master, not only of individuals, but of the national and local Governments. The committee affirm the belief that the overthrow of the liquor traffic will be attained. During the year considerable changes have been made in the league's methods of working, with very satisfactory results. There are 269 societies federated, with a membership of 72,000, showing an increase on the year of 17 societies and 7000 members.
