Just a quick question regarding the Westmorland Post Office Directory of 1858. Where it lists commercial residents, some (but not all) farmers have an asterisk against their name. I can't find anything in the directory to confirm it but does this mean they were yeoman (i.e owned the land)? Have seen this explained in other directories but not sure if same in this one. regards Cath
