    3. Brownrigg seems to mean brown ridge. There were Brownriggs near the location Brownrigg before 1550. I wonder if the origin of the surname was a brown ridge on the fell south of Brownrigg. Photos on the internet show a possible brown ridge. I don't know if this is permanent or just a seasonal aspect of some vegetation. Can anyone familiar with the locality comment on this speculation ?
