    3. HEROISM OF A NORTH-COUNTRY YEOMAN. LIEUTENANT CLAUDE LOWTHER of the Westmorland and Cumberland contingent of the Imperial Yeomanry has been recommended for the Victoria Cross for his bravery at the battle of Faberspruit. LIEUTENANT LETHBRIDGE was wounded badly in the arm and lying helpless when LIEUTENANT LOWTHER, under a perfect hail of bullets, went to his assistance. He could not get him away, but secured the comparative shelter of some rocks, where the two officers remained until dark, and then LIEUTENANT LOWTHER succeeded in bringing his friend out of danger. The rescuer, though in imminent peril, escaped with no worse mishap than a bullet through his helmet.
