Hello Pauline, I don't have a marriage cert. for William. I believe he married Alice Burn at Kendal on 25 Nov 1843 and I hope to look this up next time I can get up to Kendal, although I have found that a marriage entry of whether a father is deceased or not cannot always be relied upon. I have not been able to find a Thomas Dent, Linsey Weaver, on any census and therefore suspect that he may have died before 1841. I believe that the John Dent, step-son, living with Thomas and Elizabeth Dodgson at Sedbergh in 1851 is Elizabeth's son (illegitimate ?). The IGI gives a John Dent, mother Elizabeth Dent, bapt. 11 Nov 1835 at Kendal and FreeBMD gives a possible marriage of an Elizabeth Dent and Thomas Dodgson in June qtr 1842, Sedburgh RD. This is most likely the same John Dent age 5 who is with Sarah Dent and William Dent (son ?) on the 1841 census. The IGI gives bapts. of Wm Dent 7 June 1818 and Elizabeth 3 July 1815 both with parents Thos Dent & Sarah, which would fit with the above. My main line is from Sarah Dent (daughter) who married Thomas Medcalf at Kendal in 1832 - unfortunately too early for a father's name to be recorded in the marriage entry (deceased or not !). It could narrow it down a bit. Also have you spotted on the 1851 census a John Dent born Kendal of the right sort of age a step son of a Thomas and Elizabeth Dodgson family living Sedbergh or have you found him in the 1851 ? Derek I've had another look for your Thomas Dent on the 1841 with no success !! I can only think that he is the person who died 1838 in Kendal. Best of luck ! Regards, Pauline
