We are trying to find the exact location of Hilton Castle, near Kirkby Stephen which is shown in this photograph from the Bowes Collection at Bowes Museum. http://www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk/collections/objects/category/10/11908/ The Post office in Kirkby Stephen had never heard of it. We have reason to believe it might have been in Borrowdale, Westmoreland (not Borrowdale, Cumberland) Can anyone help? Might the Hilton in question be Hilton, near Appleby-in-Westmorland. Interestingly, Hilton, in spite of being a very small village has a street called 'Castle Street'... might be worth checking out.
