PRICE 1D. __________________________________________________ CUMBERLAND ASSIZES / CROWN COURT - Wednesday. (Before MR. JUSTICE DENMAN) The Court sat at ten o'clock, and the Grand Jury were at once sworn. His Lordship, in delivering his charge, congratulated them and the County of Cumberland on the small number of prisoners for trial, and paid a high compliment to the gentlemen of the Grand Jury for their attendance in such large numbers, as well when the calendar is small, as when it is a large one, for it was by such examples that the gentry of a county really did a service, and promote respect for the administration of justice. His Lordship then proceeded to comment on four of the cases out of the ten set down for trial. THE TRIALS OF PRISONERS. THE CALENDAR - The calendar contained the names of ten prisoners, implicated in nine offences. There was only one female. Of the males one could read, two were imperfectly instructed, two could neither read nor write, and concerning four (out on bail) no education status was given. The female was out on bail and her education not stated.
