I just spent a pleasant hour browsing through the site that John mentioned and for which Terry gave us the link. I came across a poem about the Helm Wind. It is interesting but does not sound to be the same one Judy spoke of in her post (and is not in the local "dialect"). However, that link has a lot of other interesting information and stories that give a good idea of what life must have been like "way back then"!
