    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Manor of Jonby or Johnby, co. Cumberland, circa 1380

    3. Dear Group, I am seeking any information I can find on this manor, and the following circumstances. The manor is shown in about 1380 to have been in the possession of a John de Kirketon (or Kirton), the son of a Robert de Kirketon who had married an Elena Burdon, sister and heir of her brother, Gregory Burdon, who had previously been in possession of the manor. I suspect, and am attempting to confirm, that the above John(3) de Kirketon was a great, great, great grandson of Gilbert de Kirketon, who was interim High Sheriff of Westmorland from circa 1229, following the death of the hereditary High Sheriff, Robert de Veteri Ponte, Earl of Westmorland, in late 1227, and the fact that Robert's son and heir, John de Veteri Ponte, had still not reached his majority. Gilbert evidently continued as interim High Sheriff until 1234, when John de Veteri Ponte reached his age of majority, and assumed his father's hereditary position. From 1229 until 1234 it is believed that Gilbert de Kirketon had a younger son, John(1) de Kirketon, (as mentioned in the paragraph above) acting as his Under Sheriff. When, in 1241, John de Veteri Ponte died, his post as High Sheriff was once again assumed by Gilbert de Kirketon, again with his son, John(1) de Kirketon, as his Under Sheriff, which seems to have lasted until 1246, when a new interim High Sheriff, Ralph de Nottingham took over the post, but is believed to have continued to retain John(1) de Kirketon in the post of Under Sheriff for an ongoing period of several years. It was not until 1257 that another Robert de Veteri Ponte (with wife Isabella, nee Fitz-Peter) assumed his family's hereditary post as High Sheriff, at which time it seems that a son of the same John(1) de Kirketon (above), a Gilbert(2) de Kirketon [grandson of the first Gilbert, above] held the post of Under Sheriff (ref.: Nicholson & Burns (1777) Vol.1, "History of Westmorland", p. 33:- "........Gilbert de Kirketon then sheriff of Westmorland (that is, under-sheriff to the then Robert de Veteri Ponte).....") I suspect that this Gilbert(2) de Kirketon was likely the grandfather of Robert de Kirketon, mentioned in the first paragraph, and the great-grandfather of the John(3) de Kirketon who had obtained the Manor through his mother, Elena Burdon. I suspect that until this acquisition the family had lived in Appleby fairly continuously from 1228 until about 1320. Does anyone know of any surviving records which might mention this family? Sincerely, Jonathan Kirton, Canada
