SLEE, a farmer of Hawkshead, was fined in the penalty of £100 and costs for using an illicit still for manufacturing whiskey on his farm. MANSLAUGHTER AT ULVERSTON. - On Monday last, an inquest was held on the body of JOHN AINSWORTH, a miner, before W. BLENDALL, Esq., coroner, Ulverston. JAMES ATKINSON stood implicated in the charge of causing deceased's death. The facts of the case may be briefly stated as follows: - The deceased, JOHN AINSWORTH, who had been in the employ of the Ulverston Mining Company for seven years, was engaged on Wednesday week, wheeling iron ore from a mine at Cross Gaites; and the prisoner, JAMES ATKINSON, and his son-in-law, MATTHEW MYERS, were carting the ore to the railway station. The ore, it appears, was wet, and the prisoner complained that the deceased was tipping it at a spot that prevented him and his son-in-law filling their carts with dry ore. An altercation ensued, and ultimately the prisoner became exasperated, and running up the heap, seized deceased by the collar, dragged him down, forced him across the road to the edge of a pond lying in a hollow, where, it is alleged, he threw him off his feet on some large rough stones, and that his death was caused in consequence. After hearing the evidence adduced, the jury returned a verdict of "Manslaughter" against the prisoner ATKINSON, who was forthwith committed to take his trial. ___________________________________________________
