Warren, I was referring to Williamsgill being tenanted by various branches of the Dobson family. In 1861, 1871 and 1881 Newbiggin Hall was occupied by William Crackenthorpe who, I think, owned the property. In 1891 Montague Crackenthorpe was living there. In 1901 there was only Ann Edmundson, caretaker, living at the hall. There was a Christopher Gowling, retired mason age 63, and family living in the village of Newbiggin in 1891. By 1901 Christopher Gowling's widow and her sister will still living in the village. Part of a 1787 census of Westmorland survives and the inhabitants of Newbiggin are shown in it although property names are not given. There were 2 Dobson families, those of John and William Dobson. I am guessing that John was at Newbiggin Hall. There are 3 Gowling families shown in the village; those of Thomas a mason (maybe he built Williamsgill), John also a mason and Richard another mason. Is there a record of any Gowling's as occupants, either as tenants or owners and the dates.
