Hi I dont know if this is a useful clue or s red herring but I have a family of Sowerbys at Asby in the 1700s not far from Appleby and Joseph is a common family name There is a Joseph Sowerby b 1727 in Asby who married a Isabel Hodgson. His grandson Joseph Sowerby b 1799 in Hilton married Hannah Hodgson in 1827.
