Is this census information readily available? If so, where can I get access to it? If you have easy access is it possible for you to look for the name BURN in Newbiggin and Temple Sowerby? I am particularly interested in the family of Richard BURN and Mary FARRRER. He was a Barber Surgeon and they lived in the border area of Cumberland and Westmorland after they married at Addingham (now vanished) in Cumberland. One of his daughters (Mary) was christened at Temple Sowerby in 1765. His son William, who married Hannah TALLENTIRE at Kirkland just across Crowdundle Beck from Newbiggin later farmed at Black Leases, between Newbiggin and Kirkby Thore and another son Richard lived at Woodside, Brougham between Temple Sowerby and Penrith. I have various unsourced events sent to me by another researcher, but would love to verify this information. -- ==== Michael Lightfoot Canberra, Australia michael.lightfoot@pcug.org.au ====

    3. To all who may not know of the 1787 census of Westmorland. No one knows why the census was taken and only parts of it survive. It shows, for occupants of each household: names, relationship to head of household and occupation of head. What is left of it was published by the Curwen Archives Trust in 1992. The records of the parishes that survive have been published on the web and can be found through this page: http://edenlinks.rootsweb.ancestry.com/1gp/RECORDS/TRANSINDEX.HTM David -----Original Message----- From: eng-westmorland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-westmorland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Michael Lightfoot Sent: 21 January 2009 11:30 To: eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Newbiggin Hall On Wednesday 21 January 2009 21:44:18 David Railton wrote: > > Part of a 1787 census of Westmorland survives and the inhabitants of > Newbiggin are shown in it although property names are not given.
