    3. Ambleside Lakes Herald June 8, 1883 Page 4 At Appleby On Saturday Defrauding the North-Eastern Railway Company Mrs. Louise FOGGETT, wife of a butcher in Penrith who attends weekly the market at Appleby as a dealer in fancy goods was charged at Appleby on Saturday with travelling on the North-Eastern Railway without having paid the proper fare. On 11th of May last defendant had taken a return ticket from Penrith to Kirkbythore. On Arriving at Appleby she paid the excess fare of 4d, but on her return in the direction of Penrith she made no communication to the officials at Appleby as to what she afterwards alleged was "mere forgetfulness". Defendant admitted the offence. Supt. DARRELL of Newcastle, who conducted the case, stated to the Bench that the prosecution had not been instituted with a view to punish Mrs. FOGGETT, but rather to deter others from committing the same offence which had now become a common practice throughout the whole extent of their line. He believed defendant was a hard working woman and the Company did not wish to injure her. The Bench inflicted a fine of 2s 6d and 13s costs. David Leverton
