Saturday 04 Sep 1819 (p. 3, col. 2-4) WESTMORLAND ASSIZES, 1819. On Saturday evening last, Mr. Baron WOOD and Mr. Justice BAYLEY, arrived at Appleby, preceded by the Under Sheriff, and a number of gentlemen on horseback, who went, as usual, to meet their Lordships-the Commission of Assize was read that evening, and the Court adjourned till Monday. On Sunday, their Lordships attended Divine service, accompanied by the Hon. H. C. LOWTHER, M. P., Mayor, and by the Aldermen and Common Councilmen of the Borough. An excellent discourse was delivered by the Rev. Mr. BIRD, of High Hayland, from the 35th chapter of Job, 11th and 12th verses.-"Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?-There they cry, but none giveth answer because of the pride of evil men." On Monday their Lordships repaired to Court at 9 o'clock. The following is a list of the Gentlemen sworn on the Grand Jury:- Lord Viscount LOWTHER, M. P., Foreman. Hon. H. C. LOWTHER, M. P. | R. TINKLAR, Esq. William MOORE, Esq. | N. DENT, Esq. Matthew ATKINSON, Esq. | John HAMMOND, Esq. Thomas WYBERGH, Esq. | Ralph FISHER, Esq. C. WILSON, Esq. | John HENDERSON, Esq. W. C. James BROUGHAM, Esq. | John THOMPSON, Esq. Mr. Justice BAYLEY in his charge to the Grand Jury observed, that though there was a greater number of criminals named in the Calendar than is usual at these Assizes, there was no case among them of much singularity, or of particular atrocity, and therefore, it was quite unnecessary for him to offer any comment upon them.
