The Commission of Assize and general gaol delivery, was opened here last evening by Sir John BAYLEY, who arrived about half past six; but the business will not commence until Monday morning, by which time Sir Geo. WOOD will be present. A number of gentlemen dined with the Sheriff, at the Coffee House, as usual. Our next paper will contain all the assize intelligence worthy of public attention. The business at the Criminal Bar will be light: the following are the prisoners- John TELFORD, of Bewcastle, 28, for stealing 8 heifers. Henry SCOTT, of Tallantire, 25, for sheep stealing. William COLBURN, from near Brampton, 21, for stealing wearing apparel. Edward BARNES, 27, and Edward JOHNSON, 34, of Carlisle, charged with slaughtering and stealing a lamb, the property of R. LOWRY, Esq. of Durnhill. Margaret BOWMAN, otherwise CARR, of Whitehaven, for shoplifting. Thomas ROUTLEDGE, who was concerned with H. SCOTT, for sheep stealing, was on Thursday brought from the House of Correction at Whitehaven, and lodged in Carlisle gaol, in order to be admitted King's evidence. Harvest is now become pretty general in this neighbourhood. Shearer's wages, on an average, are about 2s. per day, without meat. We are happy to hear that E. HASELL, Esq. of Dalemain, has nearly recovered from his late accident. It was not as severe as represented to us: there was no fracture of the scull. Saturday last, Jonathan THOMPSON, aged 75, was so much hurt by the falling of a piece of rock, while working in a limestone quarry near Hensingham, that his recovery is scarcely possible. On Tuesday se'nnight, at Cockermouth, two fine boys, named PELL and ARMSTRONG, were unfortunately killed by two carts passing over them. Thomas TAYLOR and James NICHOLSON, are appointed to succeed Geo. KISSUCK, and Joseph JACKSON, as police officers at Whitehaven.
