    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] FW: ALFRED KENT 1866
    2. John Steel Genealogy
    3. Seems my first reply did not go anywhere so here it is again: Lynne In the 1901 Census Alfred is there aged 35, he was born in Harlow Essex and his wife Alice aged 35 was born in Carnforth Lancashire. But there are no children listed in this census. It is possible that in 1891 Alfred was living in 23 New Street, Lancaster as there is a person of the correct age born Audley End Essex, who is a Railway Clerk in lodgings, in the same house and daughter of the head is Alice Burtle aged 25 is listed and was born in Carnforth, perhaps this is the girl he married. It would appear they married in the June Quarter of 1896 in Kendal. John

    3. The basic information for this entry is in the IGI, but the original entry in the parish register is full of so much information that I thought I would post it: From St. Martins Church in the Parish of Windermere, Westmoreland Molly GARNETT, born on Sunday the 21st day of June 1778. Baptized on Sunday, the 9th day of August, 1778 Father: Thomas Garnett of Undermilbeck, Yeoman. Son of Anthony Garnett of Undermilbeck a:forsaid Yeoman by Isabel his wife daughter of Thomas Newton of Noohead (could be Nookead?) in Ambleside Yeoman Mother: Ann, daughter of John Nicholson of Ulthwaite Blacksmith, by Margaret Daughter of John Longmire of Applethwaite yeoman. 3. There is a marriage of an Alfred Kent in Norfolk (which appears to be where his Mother was born, if the one in 1881 is yours) >From the FreeBMD Marriages Jun 1882 (>99%) Fuller Rosa Amelia Norwich 4b 210 KENT Alfred Norwich 4b 210 Land Lucy Harriett Norwich 4b 210 Spauls Daniel Norwich 4b 210 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You would need to verify that this was your Alfred The certificate would possibly give his Mother's name

Wigan in Lancashire, June 9, 1648. Sir, The Enemy hath had his agents working with some or other of every Castle in the North, for the delivery of them up to them.  Helmsley Castle was lately attempted, but the fidelity of the Souldier they applyed themselves to (to whom was offered 100 l. in hand, and 5 col. more upon bord, and to be Knighted) prevented it, for he discovered the parties, and apprehended them prisoners, and now they are in the Dungeon at Helmsley Castle.  This I can assert for truth, having examined it upon Oath. Langdale is in Westmorland, and we heare is unwilling to fight if he can prevent it, but our Forces now are in a body, and are on the edge of Westmorland, about Bowes, watching an opportunity to engage him, though they be fewer in number, Tis thought he will wheele about for Pontifret if he can possible, and miss fighting, Pontefret is blocks up with about 8oe.Horse and Foote, which is all possibly be made here for the present, the enemy there increases, and are as we hears, 250.  Horse, and 400. 3. Hi Stephen Not sure if your question has been answered yet but I had the same problem with my Derbyshire ancestors and went for the Bishops transcripts- a very intense session at the record office- with the originals. I can't do that for everyone, but it did get me back to 1630 when I had only been able to get back to 1800s on the micro fiches. LDS have since put quite few more of the baptisms on line. When I was at the Kendal office they didn't have any original registers I could view. If the microfiche is illegible-is there a further copy available in some churches-accessible by consent of a friendly (?) vicar On the BBC programme "Who do you think you are" (UK) last week I noted the descendant poring over a church copy of an early 19C register for information on her great great grandparent. Are duplicates of the Bishops transcripts still held at some churches. If so--does anyone have experience of this in terms of helpfulness of vicars/legibility? All children born in Middle Plumbgarths Betty 12 James 10 Thomas 7 George 5 Robert 2 George a Carter and Emma were married by 1861 and had a Daughter Elizabeth aged 1 and living at Dandy Row , Holme Westmorland, Emma was from Beetham, Yorkshire. Emma was born Circa 1832. By 1871 George and Emma had moved to Duke Street, Kirkby Lonsdale and George was still a Carter. There is no sign of Elizabeth, 11 would have been early to leave home but not impossible. There is an Elizabeth of the right age living as a servant in Milnethorpe who was born in Holme and I suspect this was her. Ema is there aged 9 and born in Holme Also born in Holme are John 7, Henry 5 and Agnes 2. George Airey appears to have married Emma Smith in Kendal in 1859, The marriage certificate would confirm if this marriage was indeed theirs. By 1881 George and Emma are back in Holme and George is now a Stone Mason.. Emma the daughter is with them aged 19 as is Agnes now aged 12. Additions are Mary S aged 9 and Margaret aged 7 also there are Granddaughter Margaret aged 3 months and Grandson George aged 3. Also there is niece Jane E Kitchen aged 23, so I can see where the Kitchen connection comes in, do you think that is Emma's family side or possibly Georges sisters child. If Emma's side then the marriage record may not be theirs and there could be another one. The one thing that concerns me is that George appears to have changed occupation, in 1861 and 1871 he was a Carter but in 1881 he was a Stone Mason, not impossible of course but needs to be checked, all the other details are too close a match for it to be anyone else really. George does not appear in the 1891 so I assume he must have died by then as he would have been 55 by then, nor does Emma who would have been 59. Hopefully that will give you enough to start work.
