    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] A WATCHMAKER'S GRIEVANCE
    2. Barb Baker
    3. The Times, Tuesday, Sep 11, 1877 A WATCHMAKER'S GRIEVANCE. - Last evening a meeting of watchmakers was held in the Crown, Clerkenwell-green, to receive MR. GEOFFREY BENSON and MR. WILLIAM EAGLES, of Liverpool, who came as a deputation to discuss the subject of the practice of hall-marking, in England, watch cases made abroad, and to consider what steps should be taken to put an end to this practice, the result of which is that foreign-made watches having the English hall mark on their cases are readily sold as English manufacture. Considerable correspondence on the subject with the Board of Trade had resulted in a refusal on the part of that official body to bring in a Bill to enforce a declaration as to the place of manufacture of cases sent in for assay. The Board urged that if the mark were refused to foreign cases, foreign works might be put into English cases, to which the clockmakers replied that the works could not so readily be made for the case as the case for the works. The chair was taken by MR. WOLFE. MR. BENSON said that within six weeks more than 1,000 watch cases had been sent to England to be hall-marked, and taken back to Switzerland to be fitted with Swiss works, and afterwards sent out for sale as English watches. The object of the deputation was to form a united body, so as to go with full strength before the Legislature to demand a remedy for this grievance. Reports were read of a meeting lately held at Coventry, and some correspondence was read, including a letter from MR. JOHN BRIGHT, who on being asked to interest himself in the matter, replied as follows: "I have read the correspondence you have sent me. The answer given by the Board of Trade is the one which presented itself to my mind when I heard of your grievance, and I am bound to say that I think your reply is not conclusive. There is no proof that gold watchcases can be made more cheaply abroad than in England. The material is as dear in one country as in the other, whether you speak of Switzerland or America. You say your workmanship is better than that of the foreigner, and if this be true surely you can make watchcases as cheaply as they can be produced abroad. The Board of Trade do not believe that an Act of Parliament would be of any use to you, and I incline to be of the same opinion. To insist on 'declarations' such as you wish for is not well, unless the grievance is real and important and the remedy certain. I cannot give any promise as to this matter except this, that I shall be glad to ascertain the truth about it and to give it a full consideration, if any Bill on the subject should be introduced into the House of Commons. I am, respectfully yours, JOHN BRIGHT. MR. WALTER MACKINTOSH, 12, Ryder-street, Wavertree-road, Liverpool, who said Liverpool had the advantage of connexion with MR. CROSS and LORD SANDON, whose aid might be expected. What they wanted was to have the British hall-mark converted into a British trade mark, which was only reasonable. MR. STREETON thought it the duty of all watch case makers to assist on getting this grievance redressed, and moved a resolution pledging the meeting to co-operate with Liverpool and Coventry in the matter. The motion was seconded by MR. CLARKE and passed unanimously. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. I have been told that the records for St Margaret's Church are in The Registers for the Chapelry of Staveley are at Kendal Record Office. An indexed transcript is also available in the search room there. This transcript has not been published and is therefore not available anywhere else. A kind gentleman, on another List, furnished this information. I've been told that Staveley is now in Cumbria, but the records for this church are still in Kendal. My ancestor, 4x grtgrandmother, Elizabeth ATKINGSON - aka 'Betsy', baptised, or born, on January 11, 1756. Possibly, her brother, John ATKINSON (Rev.), As well, but not sure when he was born. Would like to have birth and baptism dates for her and siblings and parents, if possible. May have been other siblings. Is there sks that would be willing to look for my ancestors, listed above? I would repay any reasonable costs incurred for copy and postage, if needed. A trip, from half way around the world(Seattle, WA) from Kendal, is way beyond my retirement budget and income. Any and all help would be gratefully appreciated. 1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Places in Kendal
    2. Frances
    3. Hello everyone On a recent trip to the UK, I spent three wonderful (but tantalisingly short) days in Kendal doing family history research. I was unable to track down all the places where my Ruthven ancestors lived in the 1800s and wondered if local residents might be able to help with the following queries. High Beast Banks (an address from the 1841 census) - I found photos of Beast Banks - would 'High' simply mean the top of the hill? Ring of Bells Yard (from the 1851 and 1861 census) - not found on modern maps, presumably somewhere near the Ring of Bells public house? does the Yard still exist? can someone tell me where exactly? Jennings Yard, 11 Highgate (from a 1846 book) - I've seen the wonderful Matthew Emmott photos on the web and found Jennings Ter on a modern map (off Dowkers Lane) - is this where Jennings Yard was? 5 Castle Park Terrace - my family lived here for 30 years. The street is not shown on modern maps but according to old maps and staff at Kendal Library, the terrace is still there, a small lane wedged between the railway line and Sedbergh Road. I found a row of terraces behind those facing Sedbergh Rd - approx opposite Sawmill Lane - but could not work out how to access the houses. I've photographed them from the other side of the railway line in Castle Road and would dearly love to know which one is number five. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Theres a mention of High Beast Banks on http://www.kendalwiki.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Greenside (hadn't seen that site before), it is at the top of Beast Banks. The triangular grass area is annotated as High Beast Banks on a 1911 map I have. I would expect the Ring of Bells Yard to be right next to the pub. An 1861 just shows "old vicarage" behind the pub. The yard may have run sideways to some properties behind Kirkland (now the parish church car park). The top end of Jennings Yard still exists, next to the (closed down) Kendal Bowman pub. I can email a photo of the entranceway (with sign over) if you want. The yard originally ran all the way down to the river (the footbridge was Jennings Yard Bridge on the old map), including the area that Jennings Terrace is now built on. There is only a single row of houses between Sedbergh Road and the railway line opposite Sawmill lane. They look a bit back to front, so what looks like the back of the houses faces the road. 3. Lynne Kendal was I think part of the London & North Western Railway up to the 1920's, they have some information on their website ( http://www.lnwrs.org.uk/ ) but no staff member with the name of Alfred Kent, though there are some other Kent's. It could be a matter of looking through trade directories for the years concerned to see how long he was stationmaster. There are railway records around in various archives, but they are by no means complete.
