Maria I think I have them in the 1851 Census. Richard Lloyd, Gardener Aged 39 Born Wrexham Derby (That seems strange and Wrexham is not Derby) and Isabella 30 Born Werester(?) Westmorland. He is a Gardener and they are both living Dingle Lane, Toxteth Park, Lancashire (Now part of Liverpool). I don't recognise Werester or what it could possibly be, I can't read the original but it certainly seems to begin with W and end with ter. Looks like they must have sailed out between early 1851 and whenever the son was born in 1853. I have not had chance to look in the 1841 yet, but will do so later when I get time. I have a copy of their marriage certificate in 1848 at Winderemere, Westmoreland. The next thing I have is a birth of a son in Sydney in 1853. I am trying to narrow the year in which they sailed. Richard LLOYD b abt 1812 in Derbyshire?, Wales (daughter's birth cert) or Liverpool, England (death cert but informant is not related). His occupation on Marriage & in Australia was Gardener (may be he worked with Isabella's father). Father - John LLOYD - Coachman, Mother - Alice HARDIMAN. Any info on where he was born or siblings would be appreciated. Isabella NEWBY b abt 1820 Westmoreland. Father - James NEWBY - Gardener, Mother - Alice (surname may be HARRISON). Any info on where he was born or siblings would be appreciated. So would anyone have access to the 1841 or 1851 Census? Or anything else that may give me clues. Will The 1891 census has 8 Brunskill's in Westmorland under the age of 5, but none are James or Matthew. The same census has 6 Brunskill's in Cumberland under the age of 5, there is no Matthew but there is a James aged 1, son of Richard (Born Kirkby Stephen) and Isabella (Born Skirwith), he has siblings as follows all born in Skirwith: Hannah 11 John 9 Richard 7 Margaret 5 Thomas 3 In 1891 they are all living in Newtown Penrith. In fact there is no Matthew Brunskill at all in any county in the 1891 census. That's about all I can deduce from my information on the 1891 census. "Impressed" means conscripted - especially into the navy (often done unfairly and many men were tricked in one way or another). If you take things a bit further and go from 'impressed' to 'press' as in Press Gang, what you get in Shirley's account is awfully civilised, as the Press Gangs in port towns would routinely bash the unsuspecting on the head before hauling him aboard one of HM vessels without so much as a 'by your leave' Liz Owen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shirley Tebay" <shirley.tebay@btinternet.com> To: <eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 2:17 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] GENERAL EVENING POST, Saturday September 14,1745 / DESERTERS > Hi Barb, > Impressed men were men who had been forced into joining the Army or Navy. > A > soldier was paid a shilling a day and in order to become a soldier/sailor > had to accept the King's shilling. Hi Barb, Impressed men were men who had been forced into joining the Army or Navy. A soldier was paid a shilling a day and in order to become a soldier/sailor had to accept the King's shilling. Unscrupulous recruitment parties would tour the inns and taverns and slip the shilling into ale glasses thus the unsuspecting man would finish his ale and fish out the shilling - and that was it. He was manhandled off to barracks. This created a trend for glass bottomed ale tankards in which a man could see if anything unwanted had been deposited in his beer. Small wonder there were so many deserters. Cheers Shirley in Dent where we have sunshine for the first time in ages ! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barb Baker" <bbaker48@sympatico.ca> To: <eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:38 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] GENERAL EVENING POST, Saturday September 14,1745 / DESERTERS > Very Interesting, Blair ! This is very interesting Barb. It's not suprising there were so many deserters, between August and Sept 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie was moving South from the highlands of Scotland to Inverness and then on to Carlise (I think he took Carlise in early Nov 1745). They were being recruited to defend Carlise and utimately England from the Jacobite rising. They may have had political (typically English Tories supported the Jacobites), religious (been catholics) or just plain scared, as reasons to desert. I suspect a lot of our Cumbrian ancestors were caught up in some way by the rebellion. Also interesting and seems to fit historically is the regimental address and the order coming from Newcastle upon Tyne. This is where the Crown (not exclusively English, as many Scot Clans fort with the Crown) forces were massing having been called back from the continent. Cumberland and Wade's forces shadowed the Jacobites South as they got to Derby and then returned North, with Cumberland ultimatly engaging them at Culloden after seigeing some of them at Carlise. Interesting times and thank you for the posting.
