Hi List, 'Lagged Cow' & 'Cowdayes' Can any one help me with these farming terms that were on an inventory? They were along with Guy & Stotte. Guy being a heifer or cow under 3 years not having had a calf and stotte being a bullock. I wonder if they are northern terms or even Scottish being found on an inventory from the north. Judy
Post Office Directory of Westmoreland Printed & Published by Kelly and Co., 1858 Entry for Bampton [starts part way down page 9 and finishes part way down page 10] Page 9 BAMPTON is a large mountainous parish and township. The village, pleasantly situated in a valley, is surrounded by lofty and rugged mountains, near the confluence of the river Lowther with Hawes Water Beck, a stream that flows from the beautiful lake of that name, and on the western side of these rivers. The neighbouring village of BAMPTON GRANGE is in the same valley but on the eastern side of these streams. They are distant 4 1/2 miles north-west from Shap railway station, 9 1/2 south from Penrith, 8 south-east from Pooley Bridge, about 2 north-east from Hawes Water lake, and 20 north from Kendal, in the West Ward division and union of the barony of Westmoreland, deanery of Westmoreland, archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church (St. Patrick) stands in Bampton Grange, and is a neat stone edifice, with nave and chancel, erected in 1726 on the site of an old one; it has a square tower, containing 5 bells. In the interior are six marble monuments - one of them in memory of Edmund and Jane, parents of Edmund Gibson, formerly Bishop of London, who was born at High Knipe, in this parish. The living is a vicarage, value £96 per annum, with residence and 4 acres of glebe land, in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the Rev. William Hodgson. Adjoining the churchyard is a Grammar school, endowed with £75 per annum, founded in 1627 by Thomas Sutton, D.D. There is a Sunday school held at the school-room. A fair is held on the 25th September, and on the second Monday after Michaelmas, for sheep and cattle. Hawes Water lake is situated within Thornthwaite manor, in the vale of Mardale, which is partly in this and partly in the adjoining parish of Shap. A company was formed about 1856, who have commenced working a mine for copper-ore amoung the mountains in this parish. In the census of 1851, the population was 533, and the acreage is about 11,720, of which about 8,000 is uncultivated mountainous moorland. The soil in the valleys is rich loam, very fertile, and the subsoil is limestone and gravel; the principal crops are hay and corn. The lord of the manor is the Earl of Lonsdale, who with Thomas Atkinson and Thomas Noble are chief landowners. There are charities of £5 13s. yearly distributed among the poor; and three public libraries, containing about 700 volumes, established in 1710, 1750 and 1757, for the use of the inhabitants. BUTTERWICK is a small village down the valley, 1 mile north-north-west. The following are hamlets in this parish:- BOMBY, distant one quarter of a mile south. HIGH and LOW KNIPE, 1 mile north. MEASAND is a hamlet, 3 miles south-west on the banks of Hawes Water, near Fordingdale Beck, a stream abounding in picturesque waterfalls. Here is a Free school, endowed with £48 per annum, for boys and girls. ROUGH HILL is a hamlet, 1 1/2 miles west-north-west, which also has an Endowed school for boys and girls, with an income of about £10 per annum. Riggendale is a deep glen, partly in this and partly in Shap parish, bordered by High-street mountain and Kidstey pike. PRIVATE RESIDENTS. Just a quick question regarding the Westmorland Post Office Directory of 1858. Where it lists commercial residents, some (but not all) farmers have an asterisk against their name. I can't find anything in the directory to confirm it but does this mean they were yeoman (i.e owned the land)? Have seen this explained in other directories but not sure if same in this one. regards Cath
My Dodds: Isabella Dodd (married James Lewis about 1803) was born 28 DEC 1780 to Thomas Dodd and Isabelle Harriman in Crosthwaite And Lyth, Westmorland, England. Great website Dave, thanks!!! You have put a tremendous amount of effort into it. I have around 160 photos of Westmorland on my SarahsTravels site, thanks to Ted Relph, ace travel guide. The 3 Westmorland albums are up at the top. I have more photos. http://www.picturetrail.com/sarahstravels Not on a website yet, in addition to Bellasis Church Notes, I also have 3 books transcribed by volunteers on the list, that were posted to this list several years ago: Westmorland - Magna Britannica (1700s) Vale of Lyvennet - compiled ca 1860, published 1910 Tour of Westmorland - by Sir Clement Jones 1948 (approved by his grandson to transcribe) Magna Britannica and Tour of Westmorland have some very cool maps and illustrations. I have several maps I can send you, at a large scale. I'll put them all on Sarahstravels and you can decide if you want to use them. ;-) Thanks again for a great website!!! But if you see any errors or broken links please let me know. My next priority is to improve the maps. I deliberately kept them small when I first introduced them in order to reduce the time needed to download them. But now that most people have broadband I can make them bigger, and less of a strain on the eyes. I also have other ideas for enhancements, but increasing the coverage of the church photos will have a lower priority (as there are so many other places you can find pictures on the Web)... I have worked out that I have been maintaining this website for over 10 years, and the rate at which interesting new sites come out has never been as high. And the usefulness of the information available now was unimaginable when I started. But if you know of any crucial sites I have missed please don't hesitate to tell me. And also if you have content you are prepared to donate please let me know. HEROISM OF A NORTH-COUNTRY YEOMAN. LIEUTENANT CLAUDE LOWTHER of the Westmorland and Cumberland contingent of the Imperial Yeomanry has been recommended for the Victoria Cross for his bravery at the battle of Faberspruit. LIEUTENANT LETHBRIDGE was wounded badly in the arm and lying helpless when LIEUTENANT LOWTHER, under a perfect hail of bullets, went to his assistance. He could not get him away, but secured the comparative shelter of some rocks, where the two officers remained until dark, and then LIEUTENANT LOWTHER succeeded in bringing his friend out of danger. The rescuer, though in imminent peril, escaped with no worse mishap than a bullet through his helmet.
