Hi David I have some Woof's from Westmorland and around Sedbergh in Yorkshire, but most of an earlier time frame. My main connection with Eleanor Woof married Thomas Herd in 1805 in Sedbergh. Hi Kate, I had a look at Nancy's Kirkby Stephen site which has some Orton PRs. Sarah Elwood marr Thomas Bland in Orton not CR. She appears to be the dau of Thomas & Mary, bap 6/3/1764 Orton. The parents are Thomas Elwood and Mary Waller who married 25/10/1762 Orton, both of this parish by banns. Witnesses: William Otway & Thomas Robinson ( who has witnessed a lot of marriages so is probably not a relation). Other siblings of Sarah are: John bap 1/9/1765, James bap 19/7/1767 bur 7/11/1778 age 11, Thomas bap 9/10/1769 bur 6/7/1843 age 73 shoemaker, Elizabet bap 10/6/1772, Richard bap 28/10/1772 & Mary bap 11/51777. Hi Anne, I have spent a bit of time researching the Ellwoods of Dufton and now have a large database!! In my Ellwood database I have a Jenetta Elwood bap 29/11/1696 Dufton dau of Thomas & Dorothy. Other siblings are: Ann bap 2/3/1698, Bridgitt bap 3/11/1703, Ann bap 17/10/1708, Dorothy bap 8/7/1711 & Henry bap 8/7/1711. Thomas was possibly bap 13/6/1667 Dufton, son of Christopher Elwood and Jane Gargatt. I'm not too sure if Christopher is Thomas' father as there are no sons of Thomas called Christopher. Does that help you at all? Hello Kate, We have a number of Blands & Ellwoods but none to match yours. There are: Ellwood - note double 'l'. Davidson Ormrod Bland, Alice of Melling Bland, Ann of Melling Bland, Jon, b. Wary, Lincs. Bur. Melling If these are of interest, we can cull them from our tree as a gedcom file. This is much easier than copying all the date, notes etc.. The chair was occupied by MR. W. H. WAKEFIELD, chairman of the Westmorland committee. The CHAIRMAN briefly opened the proceedings, and called upon MR. JAMES DIGGONS, the secretary, who read the following list of names of successful candidates. LANCASHIRE, eight entries: ELIZABETH ANN BAILEY, Rusholme WILLIAM BRIGGS, Clitheroe WASHINGTON CAMPBELL, Constance-street, Liverpool ELLEN DAVIES, Bedord Leigh JANE LEES, Miles Platting, Manchester JAMES RAFFERTY, Higher Broughton, Manchester ELIZABETH SMITH, Parker-street, Preston ELIZABETH THOMPSON, Astley, Manchester. Addresses were delivered by several gentlemen. - MR. LAWRENCE stated that the institution continued to prosper, though there were still 177 vacancies which they were unable as yet to provide for. The cost of patients per head had been about ?35, and the total cost of patients about ?15,400, which could be raised, if the asylum were filled, to ?22,000. Looking at the various sources of income, he thought that another ?3,000 a year from subscribers would perhaps enable them to fill the institution to the extent of its accommodation. A resolution was passed in which the meeting pledged itself to use every means with a view to increasing the maintenance fund as required. Other resolutions were carried appointing the committee and acknowledging the efficient services of the officers. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the proceedings to a close. ------------------------------ To contact the ENG-WESTMORLAND list administrator, send an email to ENG-WESTMORLAND-admin@rootsweb.com. Hi Sarah Thanks for the kind words. Actually I already put Westmorland - Magna Britannica is already online. Links to it from "Description & travel" You sent me the data on a CD once with the Bellasis church notes. I didn't do anything with Vale of Lyvenet because to be honest I didn't realise where it was :-( But as it includes Crosby Ravensworth, of course I will put it on. Also Jones... Hi David They aren't names I've come across yet but with that surname in Westmorland, the probabilities are fairly high that there's a connection somewhere in the dim and distant. I'm descended from Nicholas WOOF and Sarah STAGG who married 12 Mar 1770 in Lowther, through their son Joseph WOOF [b.c.1780 Lowther] and Mary LANGHORN [b.c.1783 Kirkby Thore] who married 6 July 1811 at Kirkby Thore. regards Cath ----- Original Message ----- From: "David and Mary Bossenger" <dmbza@telkomsa.net> To: <eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2008 7:01 PM Subject: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] WOOFF > Hi Cath, > My wife has on her mother's side a Dorothy WOOF b abt 1833 Firbank, > Westmoreland marrying a John ASKEW b 1824 in Stainton on 1 Jan 1853 in > Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland. You have put a tremendous amount of effort into it. I have around 160 photos of Westmorland on my SarahsTravels site, thanks to Ted Relph, ace travel guide. The 3 Westmorland albums are up at the top. I have more photos. http://www.picturetrail.com/sarahstravels Not on a website yet, in addition to Bellasis Church Notes, I also have 3 books transcribed by volunteers on the list, that were posted to this list several years ago: Westmorland - Magna Britannica (1700s) Vale of Lyvennet - compiled ca 1860, published 1910 Tour of Westmorland - by Sir Clement Jones 1948 (approved by his grandson to transcribe) Magna Britannica and Tour of Westmorland have some very cool maps and illustrations. I have several maps I can send you, at a large scale. I'll put them all on Sarahstravels and you can decide if you want to use them. ;-) Thanks again for a great website!!! I deliberately kept them small when I first introduced them in order to reduce the time needed to download them. But now that most people have broadband I can make them bigger, and less of a strain on the eyes. I also have other ideas for enhancements, but increasing the coverage of the church photos will have a lower priority (as there are so many other places you can find pictures on the Web)... I have worked out that I have been maintaining this website for over 10 years, and the rate at which interesting new sites come out has never been as high. The date and the name of the newspaper is as follows: MANCHESTER TIMES, Saturday, June 19, 1880 The entry for Cumberland, three vacancies:' Skelton Harrington, Carlisle; Robert Skelton and Wm Skelton, brothers, of the same place. ----- Original Message ----- From: Petra Mitchinson To: Genealogy-Cumberland@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2008 3:18 PM Subject: [CUL GOOGLIES] Re: ROYAL ALBERT ASYLUM. What an honour to be elected as inmate of an Idiot Asylum! Barb, could you just check - the Cumberland "idiots" are three brothers, but two of them appear to be called William, which would be unusual. Is it a mistake in the paper or a typo? Also, date and name of paper would be helpful! Many thanks for all these interesting snippets. The chair was occupied by MR. W. H. WAKEFIELD, chairman of the Westmorland committee. The CHAIRMAN briefly opened the proceedings, and called upon MR. Addresses were delivered by several gentlemen. - MR. LAWRENCE stated that the institution continued to prosper, though there were still 177 vacancies which they were unable as yet to provide for. The cost of patients per head had been about £35, and the total cost of patients about £15,400, which could be raised, if the asylum were filled, to £22,000. Looking at the various sources of income, he thought that another £3,000 a year from subscribers would perhaps enable them to fill the institution to the extent of its accommodation. A resolution was passed in which the meeting pledged itself to use every means with a view to increasing the maintenance fund as required. Other resolutions were carried appointing the committee and acknowledging the efficient services of the officers. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the proceedings to a close.

LABOUR DISPUTES AND THE STATE OF TRADE. REDUCTION OF WAGES IN THE IRON TRADE. Throughout the whole of the Furnace and Cumberland hematite iron district, there is a movement in the direction of a reduction in workmen's wages. The demand has fallen of so rapidly, and prices have come down to such a serious extent, there being a drop of 100 per cent in three months, that makers have been compelled to revise the wages paid to workmen; and at nearly all the large iron and steel producing establishments throughout the district, as well as at iron mines and elsewhere, the notice of reduction is to the extent of 20 per cent. There is not expected to be any difficulty about this, as workmen can see the necessity of the movement. On Monday nearly all the ironworks along the West Cumberland coast were stopped in consequence if the furnacemen and other ironworkers having struck against a reduction of 20 per cent. Over 2,000 men are out of work, and the iron ore and coke is standing in wagons in abundance all along the line. Limekilmns and ore pits are also affected.
