Sarah, And of course all the other Westmorland listers, The UK Surnames lists started life as a list for the modern Cumbria. I quickly expanded it to include the whole country - but still maintained the county divisions for it. There is indeed a section for Westmorland and some Westmorland names are also still included under the banner Cumbria. Whilst it isn't a county limited list, you can of course just use it for one county if you wish, but you would then lose the benefits of being able to easily "look over the borders" into the other counties. Additional features also allow you to browse all the names from particular places, list all the contributors listing the same names as yourself, and list all the names from the same places as yours. All of this makes finding new contacts much easier. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 30 Oct 1885 Death of Sam Garside Death of an Old Ambleside Resident It is our sorrowful duty, this week to record the death of an old and much respected resident of Ambleside, Mr. SAMUEL GARSIDE, plumber and painter etc. who died at a late hour in the evening of Thursday the 22nd inst, after an illness of threes weeks. During his forty-six years of residence in Ambleside, he had always been ready to lend a helping hand where help was needed. MR. GARSIDE was born in the year 1825, at the Woolpack Hotel, in Kendal and after fourteen years' residence in Shap, he came to Ambleside and was apprenticed to Mr. JAMESNOBLE. Shortly after this he began to take an active interest in the work of Wesleyan Methodism and for seven years he was a Sunday school teacher in the Wesleyan Sunday School. In 1842, MR. GARSIDE began in business for himself and soon after this period he was appointed librarian to the Mechanics' Institute, which office he held for fifteen years. He was connected with two friendly societies In Ambleside -- the Foresters and Oddfellows -- and was a member of the Society for the Prosecution of Felons. Many have benefitted by his remarkable skill as a bone setter, an operation which was always most willingly undertaken, and for which no charge was ever made. The deceased was interred at St. Mary's Church, Ambleside, on Monday morning when about 150 persons were present. Four beautiful wreaths were placed on the coffin which was borne from Smallwood House at about half past eleven. The vicar, the Rev. C.H. CHASE, performed the last offices and the voluntaries were played by Mrs. J. HIRD. Mr. W. STALKER was the undertaker. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 16 Feb 1883 Page 4 Death of a Wray Farmer in South Africa We regret to record the demise of WILLIAM GARNETT and much respected farmer, who resided at Wray until last March, when he set sail with his wife and child for South Africa, where he hoped to settle as a farmer. During the voyage he was seized with disease which necessitated him remaining in quarantine for eight weeks. Soon after he commenced to work on his farm, but his colonial career was unfortunately cut by death, through the giving way of a blood vessel. This happened on the 3rd January, he being in his 35th year. His burial took place on the same day at Maritzburgh, Natal, and he was followed to the grave by a few young settlers from his native place.
Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 21 Sep 1883 Page 4 In Memorium With regret, it becomes a duty to record in our obituary of this week the decease of a well known resident of the village of Windermere. The late THOMAS GEE or "Tom" as he was familiarly called, though not born to high estate or reared in the lap of luxury, has passed from our midst with the sympathetic regrets of hundreds of residents and visitors who knew him as he was. About 16 years ago he came to reside at the Windermere Hotel, from the neighbourhood of Milnthorpe, and for years acted alternately as chaise driver and boots at the above well known hostelry, where he gained the respect of all with whom he had dealings; but becoming subject to epileptic attacks he had to relinquish that position and for some years back has acted as a "general utility" to the place. Always civil and obliging, and willing to assist in whatever was required, his well known figure clad in somewhat eccentric garb will be missed by hundreds of periodical visitants to Windermere. The attacks to which he was a victim increased as Time rolled on, and on Tuesday week he succumbed to a violent series of convulsions, at the comparatively early age of 37. His remains were followed to the grave by a large number of residents of the place. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net
Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 16-October-1880 Page 4 A Domestic Romance The will of the late MR. GIBSON of Ravenstonedale has been proved in the Carlisle Court under £250,000 personalty. This is the conclusion of a story that might readily be woven into a romance. Five brothers of the name GIBSON were born at the end of the last century and the beginning of the present one in one of the little dales of Westmorland, and the last of the five has recently died. One succeeded to the small family estates, two entered the Church, and one became a manufacturer in Kendal, the fifth dying comparatively early. All were careful men, each remained unmarried and each bequeathed to the surviving brothers, his wealth. The result is seen in the proving of the will of the last of the Ravenstonedale Gibsons in Carlisle Court a few days ago. Hi Sarah, I am also interested in both the Hanson Family & Kersey's (Kearsey, Kersy, Casey) which have been posted by Anne Hanson. 1) I would be interested to know more about the Abraham 'HERSEY' (Kersey) mentioned in the CR Parish Registers. Abraham Hersey (Kersey) of Woodfoot. Householder Poor. Buried 6 Feb 1749. How could he be a householder & poor? Would there be any Manorial records for 1749 to check on 'Woodfoot'? 2)LANGHORNE Elizabeth. Married Henry Wilkinson 26 Jun 1615 CR, Died 1667. Is there any record of LANGHORNE's in CR around 1595 ish which I recon to be around her birth year. I would like to know what Jonathon's mother' name was and when she married Abraham? 2. A Thomas LONGMIRE married Margaret HANSON 10 May 1790, Crosby Ravensworth. I am a direct descendant of James MOSS(E) who was buried in Crosby Ravensworth (November 1580). If my research is correct his 3xGreat Granddaughter is Grace MOSS (who married a William SALKELD [May 1693]). In saying that I am having difficulty proving her parentage. Would the Archives hold any proof of her birth etc. Garry F Bell gazza@woosh.co.nz > How many people out there have an interest in Crosby Ravensworth?
