    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Butcher's Arms Crosby Ravensworth
    2. GG
    3. Hello All, While sorting through some old emails I found this history of the landlords/ladies of the Butcher's Arms in Crosby Ravensworth. I thought it might be of interest to someone. Henry Ward, who was born at 'Fell Gate' in 1773 married a Rebecca Dixon, and became Innkeeper at the Butcher's Arms, but he died in 1810 when only 37. His widow later remarried and as Rebecca Richardson continued as the Landlady until 1842. The next landlord was a John Loy but he died in 1849 and his widow, Catherine Loy continued at the pub until at least 1868, as the workmen building the bridge where you turn for Harberwain, in that year, refreshed themselves with ale from Catherine Loy's. During her time, in 1853, the pub was rebuilt by M. & A. E. which is understood to have been the Ewebank Family, who were owners until 1949, when the then tenant, Mrs Morley, bought the property. Cath Loy continued living in retirement in the village until 1910, when she was 95 .Before her marriage she had been a Dodd from Harberwain. By 1891 we find the former blacksmith's widow, Mrs Hannah Johnson in charge of the Butcher's Arms. She was then nearing 70 but with the help of a grown-up son and daughter, remained there until at least 1906. Her son Richard continued to work his father's smithy at Bridge End. In 1926 the owner was John (Jack) Morland. Jack had a cattle-lorry and was a 'carrier' to Penrith on a Tuesday before the 'Queen Bee' began a regular bus-service. The lorry was adapted to take wooden seats on the back so it could carry passengers, His wife died a few years later and in 1932 Mrs Norman came to keep house for him. Her son, Edwin, after finishing his schooling and taking a farm job in Cumberland, came to work at Ploveriggs in 1935, living in at the farm. He remembers that the main bar was seldom used, unless there was a 'do' on in the Village Hall; the few local regulars just sat in the kitchen, playing dominoes etc. Jack liked the company and 'thowt it waz mair hyamley.' There were no pumps, the barrels of beer were tapped and kept down in the cellar, the beer being carried up in jugs to be served as required. Jack died in 1936 and was followed by his newly-married nephew, Frank Parkin. Frank and Violet moved in in the November of 1936. Violet is still alive and living in New Zealand. In a recent letter, she writes "We went to the Butchers soon after our marriage in Oct 1936', Frank was 28 and I was 27, we were the youngest pub-keepers around. Frank was a nephew of Jack Morland's and Jacks housekeeper, Mrs Norman, stayed on until after Vi. and he moved in. Ingram Dawson, a solicitor, but who wasn't local [Barnard Castle?] helped them get the pub. He came regularly and took a delight in Vi's cooking (jugged hare). and regularly brought his clients. They were forced to give up the pub after war broke out as, although Frank was not accepted for the armed services he was directed to work on destroyers in the shipyards at Newcastle. Uncle Lance (Johnston) lived with them at the pub for a while. Ingram Dawson, a solicitor, but who wasn't local [Barnard Castle?] helped them get the pub. He came regularly and took a delight in Vi's cooking (jugged hare). and regularly brought his clients. Mrs M. Morley was tenant at first, but she bought the inn from the Ewebanks in 1949, then sold it the following year. Landlords since 1950.. 1950 - 1950 Mrs Wright and Miss Kimberley. 1950 - 1951 Mr. & Mrs. L. H. Jones. 1951 - 1956 Mr. & Mrs. Matt Hale. 1956 - 1958 Mr. E. It wasn't regular dominoes, it was different and we kept changing tables. I'll look for more photos. Thanks again for your post, Gillian! Sarah WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Butcher's arms is alive and well, I will post photos. Went to a lively card game there in 2006, lost miserably but I think they ganged up on me. 3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue #228 1 August 1884 Page 4 Gunpowder Works Exploded by Lightning On Saturday morning a thunderstorm passed over the Lake District. At the Blackbeck Gunpowder Works, two miles from the foot of Lake Windermere, three men had just entered the corning house, after breakfast, the machinery not having been started, when a flash of lightning exploded about 8 cwt. of powder in the corning house. The building was situated in the heart of a wood. Portions of the roof and timbers were blown a distance of a hundred yards, and the three men were lifted into the wood -- a distance of dozen yards. They died before remedies could be applied. Their names were: JOHN WOODEND of Bouth, aged 60 single; REUBAN STEPHENSON, Bouth, 35 married with five children; WILLIAM PHILIPS, Benthaw, 23 married one child. GEORGE GOSDEN, a widower, was standing outside the building at the time of the explosion. His clothes were set on fire, but he ran to a beckcourse, some fifty yards away and jumped in. He is badly burned about the body and legs but is expected to recover. He was burnt at the explosion of the corning house on the same site three years ago. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 7 Aug 1885 Death of JONATHAN PARK Page 4 Deaths On Tuesday 4th inst at Rydal Road, Ambleside, JONATHAN PARK, labourer, aged 66 years and on Page 5 Sudden Deaths A very sudden death took place at Ambleside on Tuesday morning last, Mr. JONATHAN PARK, residing at MRS. NIGHTINGALE's, Rydal Road Ambleside, mole catcher, an old resident of this town retired to rest in his usual good health and was found dead in bed the next morning. On Monday, MR. PARK appeared to be quite well; in the evening he went up to the dog kennels, and was there in company with several acquaintances but nothing in his manner betrayed the approaching calamity. About ten o'clock he went to bed, and during the night was heard coughing. In the morning some relation came to see him, but he had not risen at his usual time, and MRS. NIGHTINGALE called several times, but received no answer. Being alarmed she looked into his bedroom once or twice, but did not notice anything extraordinary. After some time, she went into the room, and found MR. PARK lying with one leg over the side of the bed and she at once saw that he was dead. DR. JOHNSON was sent for, and, upon arrival said the deceased had been dead for several hours, but expressed no opinion as to cause of death. Communications were forthwith made with the district coroner, but it was not deemed necessary to hold an inquest. The deceased was 66 years of age and had never been married. It is surmised that the deceased died from an attack of apoplexy. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net

I have a date of birth for a Sarah Ullock but I am not certain how I came by it 16 Dec 1764 and a note that she may have come from Coniston or Whitehaven. I am looking for the link to Sarah Ullock as above - any thoughts please Kind regards David in Flooded Tewkesbury

    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 25 May 1883 Page 4 Death of Mr. Mitchell Death of a Well Known cattle Dealer Old MR. MITCHELL, well known in former years as a horse dealer, was buried on the 16th inst., and his funeral was attended by farmers from all parts of the district. He had outlived the condition of things in which his particular talent was useful. Before the railway era, great fairs were held at Rosely Hill and Brough Hill, where, at set periods of the year, thousands of people gathered from far and wide, and much business was done. MR. MITCHELL was the chief purveyor of young horses on these occasions. Some days previously he would scour the entire country, buying up all the "stags" that he could get hold of, and with these in a long queue he made his appearance at Rosley or Brough. He was a man whose genius enabled him instinctively to guage the prospects of the horse trade; but it is a trade in which no genius can save a man from losses; and MR. MITCHELL shared the vicissitudes incidental to the business. It is said that horse dealing would corrupt the integrity of a saint; nevertheless, without being a saint, old MR. MITCHELL retained the respect of those with whom he traded. David David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net

Last Call- Crosby Ravensworth Sarah Reveley Hello all Westmorland listers, especially CR researchers and Sarah, Sorry for this late reply, I needed to look up 'where I was at' with my Crosby Ravensworth line. If it is too late no worries! I did go and stand outside the archives at Crosby in April but had come on a day they were closed, but got a flavour of the place anyway. My question regards my WILSONs: Stephen WILSON b. 30 Dec 1832 CR to a William WILSON 14 AUG 1808 Endmoor, Heversham WM died 1885 JUN East Ward farming at Scalegill, Orton (tho' it is over the motorway now) and Elizabeth Nicholson 16 Jan 1814 CR d. before 1871(I think), married 1827 21 Nov Appleby St Lawrence. I wondered if they could confirm that is this Elizabeth and whether I am right on her parents-Robert NICHOLSON (don't have birth) and Elizabeth PRICKET (1799 marriage record Burton in Kendal). Also I have lots of WILSONs after Stephen's birth but none before 1832 and since their marriage was 1827, this seems a bit odd. Are there any more children? Stephen's birth place was Reagill just on the outskirts of CR. I have found a picture of this in a very old inventory book of Westmorland architecture- sadly not mine. So far I have found 7 siblings for Stephen all younger than him. Any information to further the cause gratefully received!
