    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 231 11 Aug 1884 Page 4 Death of JOHN TYSON Death of a Westmorland Man in Liverpool It is with regret that we this week announce the death, after a lingering illness, of a former resident of Ambleside, and a native of the district, which took place at 132 Crown Street, Liverpool, on Monday last, the 18th inst. Mr. JOHN TYSON was the eldest son of the late Mr. THOMAS TYSON, farmer of Skelgill and Waterhead, Ambleside, and was a pupil of the late REV. WM. SEWELL. The deceased at an early age entered the General Post Office at Liverpool, and continued therein until some eighteen months ago, when, through failing health, he was compelled to resign his post, and retired on a pension, having attained the high position of a Superintendent of the General Post Office, and given 38 years to the service of the Crown. He was not however, destined to enjoy his well earned pension for any length of time, for his illness slowly but surely assumed a more serious form, and towards last weekend his relatives in Ambleside were informed that he was getting worse, and about eleven o'clock on Monday night he passed peacefully away. The funeral takes place in Liverpool today, when a large number of relations and friends will no doubt attend to pay a last tribute to one whose kind and genial manner had won for him the respect of all with whom he came in contact. MR. TYSON was in the 60th year of his age. On the 18th at 132 Crown Street, Liverpool, Mr. JOHN TYSON, eldest son of the late Mr. THOMAS TYSON, farmer, of Ambleside, aged 59 years. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 169 15 Jun 1883 Page 4 Death of JOSEPH TURNER 169.4 Death of an Old Inhabitant of Elterwater On Sunday week at Elterwater, JOSEPH TURNER expired at about 4 pm. The deceased was a native of Seathwaite, Cumberland, and was 87 years of age. His mother had three sisters, and they along with her had each ten children, the deceased being the last of them all. He could remember seeing the reverend and celebrated wonderful WALKER, of Seathwaite just once, and described him as a plain looking old man, and at that time engaged in spinning linen and teaching the parish children in front of the Communion rails. JOSEPH TURNER was a man of very abstemious habits – he had only three meals per day, and these consisted generally of oat meal porridge and a little coffee for breakfast, a few potatoes and a little meat for dinner, and tea with plain bread and butter about four o'clock; after which he would retire to rest about five in winter and six in summer, and he would rise about six o'clock in summer and seven in winter. He was very tall and straight even up to the last, and had a most healthy and honest countenance. He said the first time he felt any failing in his physical strength was on one hunting expedition, when he had to climb a wall – he was slower in the work than he had thought he should have been, though he was then 65 years old. He retired from work when 60 years of age and spent his leisure time in taking various walks and conversing with his neighbours, friends and tourists whom he might casually meet. The deceased was very highly respected by all who knew him. He was interred at Holy Trinity, Langdale on Thursday the 7th inst. 3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue #101 24 February 1882 Page 4 Death of WILLIAM STEWARDSON Found Dead at Bowness An inquest was held at Stag's Head Hotel, Bowness on Friday afternoon last, before C.G. THOMSON, Esq., and jury, whereof Mr. J. METCALF was foreman, on the body of WILLIAM STEWARDSON, a gardener who had been found dead in bed at his lodgings that morning. SARAH NELSON of Grasmere, a widow said: Deceased, WILLIAM STEWARDSON, was my nephew. He was 47 years of age, and a gardener by trade; but has been ill for the last four or five years and for some time has not been able to follow his employment. Until recently he and his father lived together. The father, who died on the first of February, was of very penurious habits and would not procure the necessaries of life, although he had money. Since his death the deceased had an allowance of 3s 6d from the club. The property remaining is to be divided amongst three - myself and two others. When I was sent for and came down here, he was not in bed but I found him in his room along with Mrs. Barker, where he was lodging. He seemed nicely and did not make any particular complaint; but he had said that he would not be long here. He has been very much troubled with sleepless nights since his father died, and has been taking liquor as well as medicine supplied by the doctor. I gave him some medicine according to the doctor's orders from the bottle now produced. Deceased said he was used to taking five spoonfuls of the medicined for a dose. On leaving for the night, I told the young boy not to let anyone in; and when I came this morning the shutters were down and Hadwin had not come down, but afterwards we went together into deceased's room and found him dead. He said last night that he would not live long but did not complain of neglect in any way, or the want of anything. Coroner: I think when deceased and his father lived they often wanted for the necessaries of life on account of their carefulness. It was about twenty minutes past eight when we found deceased. HENRY BARKER, of Bowness, 15 years of age said he resided with his mother. Deceased had lived with them for about a fortnight, and had been ailing during the whole time. He appeared to be seized for the worse only yesterday or the day before, and though he did not complain of anything particularly, he sent for DR. DOBSON, and the assistant came. I gave him some medicine, but he was not satisfied with the quantity and measured about five spoonfuls for himself. THOMAS DOBSON, MD deposed - I have attended the deceased more or less for the past 20 years; during the past five or six years have been frequently and during that time he has not been able to work. He was suffering from sleeplessness and general debility, which more recently turned to bronchitis. I prescribed the medicine to him, which consists of tincture opium and bromide of potassium. Two spoonfuls is a proper dose, and he had instructions as to quantity; but he has been used to taking the same kind of mixture for so many years that double the quantity that would prove fatal ordinarily would not affect him. I have, however, ordered deceased recently that he was not to take more than the proper quantity; and I also gave a similar caution to MRS. BARKER, his landlady. . The Coroner having noticed there were no directions on the bottle, witness replied that he had not considered it material as deceased well knew how much to take; and as he had been used to it for some years even a double dose, or more, would not cause any serious or fatal effects on deceased; in fact, he could take it (the mixture) the same as water. Although the dose given by MRS. NELSON was a large one, it was not the cause of death in this case, and he did not think it was sufficient to do so. The actual cause of death was owing to continuous bad living over a lengthened period, but not particularly towards the last - not having sufficient food. Deceased had also been in the habit of taking a great deal of alcoholic stimulants since his father's death, and not sufficient nutritious food. What he had would be principally tea etc. Coroner: What is your opinion as to the actual cause of death? Witness: I would say the cause of death was a failure of the proper action of the heart, and a dose of that stuff would accelerate it. Coroner: Do you think a post mortem examination would assist you in arriving at a more definite conclusion? Witness: I don't think so; but if you consider it necessary I can make a post mortem examination at once. The Jury, in reply to the Coroner, said they did not think such an examination at all necessary after the remarks of DR. DOBSON and in this view the Coroner said he concurred. He did not think there was any difficulty in the way of finding a verdict; still he considered it a rather peculiar case and such a one as it was proper to inquire into. A verdict was then entered according to the evidence. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net

    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue #247 12 Dec 1884 Page 4 Death of HENRY SKELLAND Death of Oldest Oddfellow In England The death is announced of Mr HENRY SKELLAND, of Aughton, near Ormskirk. MR. SKELLAND was the oldest Oddfellow in England, having belonged to the Manchester Unity for 66 years. He joined the "pride of Glory" Lodge, Leigh District when he was 18 years of age, and in 1836, taking up his residence at Burscough, he opened the "Good Intent" Lodge, Ormskirk, with which he had ever since been connected, and of which up to a short time ago, he was one of the trustees. He founded Oddfellowship, and spread its principles throughout the Ormskirk District (with the exception of the "Earl of Derby" Lodge, Newburgh, then attached to the Wigan District) which comprises 1,500 members. He took part in the Preston Guild procession of 1822, and also walked in friendly society processions in 1842, 1862 and 1882. In the guild week of 1842 the demonstration of the friendly societies took place on the Monday. MR. SKELLAND walked from Burscough to Preston on that occasion, a distance of over 16 miles, beginning his journey at midnight on Sunday, and on his arrival at Preston walked through the town with the Oddfellows in the friendly society processions. At the Guild of 1882 he rode in a carriage which had been provided for old members, and was congratulated on his hale and hearty appearance. He wore on that occasion a silver medal which had been presented to him some years ago by the Oddfellows fraternity. 3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue #149 26 January 1883 Page 4 - Death of JAMES ROBINSON Sad Disappearance Of An Ambleside Tradesman During the present week the residents of Ambleside have been much troubled over the disappearance since Saturday night last, of Mr. JAMES ROBINSON (of the firm of Cousins and Robinson, plasterers), aged about sixty years, who is supposed to have been drowned in the River Rothay, in the part known as Birdhouse. The warrant for this supposition lies in the fact that MR. ROBINSON's hat was found on Monday morning last, at the side of the river opposite Old Brathay; also that he was met on the previous Saturday evening, at about seven o'clock, down the fields near to Miller Bridge, and that a splash was heard from the river near Rothay Bridge by some passers by, a little later in the evening. An energetic search was prosecuted throughout the neighbourhood on Sunday, and on Monday morning a large number of boats, filled with sympathising occupants, commenced a search of the river, drags being obtained from Bowness to assist. The workers have stuck manfully to their task up to the present moment, but without any trace further than the discovery of the hat, which was made by MR. KELLETT COWARD. In the meantime, the suspense is felt very keenly by the relatives and friends, and it is to be hoped that some news of the missing one will be forthcoming before long. Issue 194 7 Dec 1883 Page 4 High Court of Justice, Probate Division Before Sir JAMES HANNEN, President, on Wednesday the 28th ult a motion was made by Mr. JOSEPH GATEY, as Counsel for Mrs. JANE ROBINSON (instructed by Mr. GEORGE GATEY, solicitor, Ambleside), for permission to take out letters of Administration to the effects of JAMES ROBINSON, plasterer, Ambleside, who disappeared on 20th of January last, and has not since been heard of. It was proved by a large number of affidavits that MR. ROBINSON was last seen on the 20th of January last, a little after 7 o'clock in the evening, near to the Boys' School in Ambleside, walking in the direction of Miller Bridge, and it is supposed that in consequence of the darkness of the night he missed the end of the bridge and fell into the river, which was much flooded at the time. No trace of the unfortunate man has ever been discovered, except that his hat was some time after picked out of the reeds below the junction of the rivers Rothay and Brathay and near to the head of the lake. The President made an order that the death of James Robinson should be assumed to have taken place on or about the 20th of January last. I have not been able to find the children listed on FamilySearch.org ___________________ I have found a few of the children's names on the Death Index. These may or may not be your ULLOCKs. I find the first on your list a bit "suspect", as it says a James and then says it is a daughter. I wonder if it should be Jane and not James. Here is a Jane ULLOCK who died in Yorkshire in the 3rd Qtr. of 1867, aged 74 (b. abt. 1793) Here is a Robert ULLOCK who died in the 4th Qtr. of 1839, Ulverstone [ this is the first Robert who I have found ] Here is a Mary ULLOCK who died 1867, age 65 (b. abt. 1802), Kendal, Lancashire-Westmorland. I forgot to mark which Quarter of the year, but I can go back and fetch that. I wonder, if you feel that these could be some of your ULLOCKS, whether buying the Death Certificate would give some further clues. There is no sign of an Atkinson ULLOCK/HULLOCK etc. anywhere that I have looked. Wouldn't you think that at least one of them would be on the 1841 Census ! I'm not having much luck there, but will keep looking. Sincerely, Barb, Ontario, Canada.

    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 7 Aug 1885 Death of JONATHAN PARK Page 4 Deaths On Tuesday 4th inst at Rydal Road, Ambleside, JONATHAN PARK, labourer, aged 66 years and on Page 5 Sudden Deaths A very sudden death took place at Ambleside on Tuesday morning last, Mr. JONATHAN PARK, residing at MRS. NIGHTINGALE's, Rydal Road Ambleside, mole catcher, an old resident of this town retired to rest in his usual good health and was found dead in bed the next morning. On Monday, MR. PARK appeared to be quite well; in the evening he went up to the dog kennels, and was there in company with several acquaintances but nothing in his manner betrayed the approaching calamity. About ten o'clock he went to bed, and during the night was heard coughing. In the morning some relation came to see him, but he had not risen at his usual time, and MRS. NIGHTINGALE called several times, but received no answer. Being alarmed she looked into his bedroom once or twice, but did not notice anything extraordinary. After some time, she went into the room, and found MR. PARK lying with one leg over the side of the bed and she at once saw that he was dead. DR. JOHNSON was sent for, and, upon arrival said the deceased had been dead for several hours, but expressed no opinion as to cause of death. Communications were forthwith made with the district coroner, but it was not deemed necessary to hold an inquest. The deceased was 66 years of age and had never been married. It is surmised that the deceased died from an attack of apoplexy. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net

    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Carrick and Armstrong Families
    2. hlnrhelen
    3. Hi I am new to the list and my name is Helen and I am researching the families CARRICK and ARMSTRONG on my maternal side. I am a South AFrican who moved to the UK five years ago and now am tracing my family back to their roots. The people in particular that I am looking for information about are: Joseph Carrick born c.1840 in Westmoreland, England. He married Mary Ann Armstrong who was born in CHoglan, Cumberland c. 1843. Her parents were Ralph Armstrong and Hannah Armstrong. All information that I have about Joseph Carrick parents are that his parents were Thomas and Hannah? Joseph and Mary Ann Carrick had three children: Hannah b. 1863 George b. 1866 Thomas b. 1867 (this is my ggfather). They left England and immigrated to South Africa probably Cape of Good Hope but I am not sure when they left. I have copies of all of their death notices from the archives in South Africa and the children were all born in England. I am not sure what year they would have left to go to AFrica and have no idea of the history of Westmoreland or Cumberland. The 1871 Census shows that the family was living in Civil Parish SHap, CLiburn. I would appreciate any information? Thank you Helen
